Subsequent to his application for a pension on 29 April 1904, William Whitney answered an interrogatory from the Bureau of Pensions on 27 May 1904 from Mechanic Falls, Androscoggin Co., Maine. He testifies that he was born 29 August 1841 in Otisfield, Cumberland Co., Maine. He enlisted at Portland, Maine on 29 October 1861. Prior to enlistment, he lived in Casco, Maine where he was a farmer, and his post office was Webb's Mills. He was discharged at Portland, Maine 16 December 1864. Since discharge he has lived only at Mechanic Falls, Maine, where he is a hardware merchant. He is 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighs 150 pounds, and has hazel color eyes, dark complexion, and is bald. What hair he has was once dark, but is now gray. His full name is William Whitney. This testimony was witnessed by Frank M. Davis and Edward Rawson.
In further testimony the same day, he testifies that is married to Rose E. (Rawson) Whitney. They were married 17 June 1866 at Minot, Maine by Rev. William H. Foster, and the marriage is recorded in Minot, Maine. They have no living children. There is a certified copy of their marriage record in the file. It was certified by Frank P. Attwood, Clerk of the Town of Minot. The certificate conveys the same information as previously given.
William Whitney was pensioned on 1 August 1904 at $6.00 per month, and on 14 June 1907 was increased to $12.00 per month.
The file contains the death record for William. He died a retired man at Pleasant Street, Mechanic Falls, Maine on 1 March 1911. The cause of death was angina pectoris. He was 69 years, 6 months, and 1 day old. He was born in Otisfield, Maine to William and Abigail (Mayberry) Whitney. The father William was a farmer, born at Otisfield, Maine, and his mother was born at Casco, Maine.
On 10 March 1911 Rose E. Whitney, widow of William, signed a Declaration for Widow's Pension. She is 62 years old and a resident of Mechanic Falls, Maine. No new information is added to the previous testimony of her late husband. The Declaration is witnessed by Heman N. Whittle and Mary E. Dwinel. Rose Whitney died 28 March 1927.
