* Note.- CONSTANCE WHITNEY. In Stowe's "Survey of London,"

folio, 1633, there is an inscription given, to be found on a monument in
St. Giles Cripplegate Church, "on the South side of the quire," - the
following account of which is taken from that work and the "New View
of London," published in 1708.

"Above Mr. Fox's is a very spacious fine white Marble Monument

adorned with an entablature, Pediment; the figure of a young Lady
rising (in a black coffin), with her winding-sheet about her (as an Em-
blem of the Resurrection); and two Cupids, one offering her a Crown,
the other a Chaplet; with this Inscription, partly on the side of the
Coffin, the rest under it [the inscription is given as printed in the 'Survey
of London,' 1633]:--

"'To the Memory

of CONSTANCE WHITNEY, eldest daugh-
ter to Sir ROBERT WHITNEY, of WHIT-
NEY, the proper possession of him and his
ancestors, in Herefordshire, for above
500 years past. Her Mother was the
fourth daughter of Sir THOMAS LUCY,
of CHARLECOITE, in Warwickshire, by
CONSTANCE KINGSMELL, daughter and
Heire of RICHARD KINGSMELL, Survey-
or of the Court of Wards. This Lady
LUCY, her grandmother, so bred her
since she was eight years old,

[Thus farre written upon the figure

of resemblance of a Coffin.]


As she excel'd in all noble qualities, becom-
ming a Virgin of so sweet proportion of
beauty and harmony of parts, she had all
sweetnesse of manners answerable:
A delightfull sharpnesse of wit;
An offencelesse modesty of Conversation;
A singular respect and piety to her Pa-
rents; but Religious even to example.
She departed this Life most Christianly, at
seventeene; dying, the griefe of all; but
to her Grandmother an unrecoverable
losse, save in her expectation shee shall
not stay long after her, and the comfort of
knowing whose she is, and where in the
Resurrection to meet her.'"

The following is from the "New View of London:" --

"Under which Inscription are her Arms as a single woman,--
"'Sable a Cross Chequy Or and Gules,

borne in a Lozenge.'

"There is not date to the Monument; but I have some reason to be-
lieve it about 100 years old. This is probably it that has given occasion
to so many fabulous Relations of a Woman here, who, after she was
buried, was taken up alive, and had several Children afterward."

Note by H. G. S.--Some person has added, in ink, to the foregoing account,--"two children, there being two on the monument." (!) The monument was probably erected about 1632.
