Lederer, Inez (Stevens), "New Salem, Mass., Church Records," NEHGR, Volume CXIII (1959), pp. 29-42.

[p. 29]

In the fall of 1955 I had the occasion to examine what is left of the original records of the old parish church in New Salem, formed in 1742. I was interested only in the Admissions, as the vital records were included in the "New Salem Vital Records" (1927). In 1855 all of the town records were burned, along with the vital records; so this volume is made up of material from divers sources, such as the old church records that were extant in 1927. Of course, the valuable Admissions were not considered part of the vital records.

9. JOHN3 JONES (Abraham2, Thomas1), born in Hull about 1669/70, died in Mendon, Mass., 28 March 1753, in his 84th year. He married, first, about 1693, SARAH -----, died in Mendon 3 March 1750, in her 83d year, identified in the Bosworth genealogy as a daughter of John Lobdell of Hull and his wife, who was a daughter of Nathaniel2 and Bridget (Bellamy) Bosworth; and, secondly, in Holliston, Mass., 11 Sept. 1751, MRS. MARY POTBERY, died there 13 June 1756, in her 76th year.
John Jones moved to Mendon with his family soon after 11 March 1703, when his brothers Thomas and Ephraim sold

him their allotment of land in that town. In Mendon he held the office of selectman and was an elder of the church. He and his descendants lived in that section of Mendon which was set off as the town of Milford in 1780 and as Hopedale in 1886. The petition of John Jones, William Cheney, and others on the East Side of the Mill River to be erected a separate precinct from Mendon was presented to the House of Representatives 27 Nov. 1735 (Journals, 13-126), and dismissed the following December because of the opposition of other families in the same locality (ibid., 13-174). In 1730 a complaint had been brought against the selectmen of Mendon, which ws thus passed on by the House: "Upon hearing of the complaint of Samuel Morse against the selectmen of Mendon, it appears that the said selectmen of Mendon have been guilty of a great comtempt of the authority of this Court, except Mr. John Jones, who fully acquitted himself thereof" (ibid., 9-374). For other details of the life of Elder John Jones, see Ballou's "History of Milford, Mass.," pp. 848ff. The will of John Jones (Worcester County A33893) was written in Mendon 11 Dec. 1749 and was probated 9 May 1753. It mentions wife Sarah; sons John, Nathaniel, Abraham, Joseph; daughters Sarah Corbitt, Mercy Thwing, Lydia Whitney; and grandchildren Sarah, Mary, Martha, Mercy, John, Asa, Nathan, and Brdget Wood, children of deceased duaghter Bridget Wood; sons-in-law Elder Daniel Corbitt and Jonathan Whitney to be executors; witnesses Mary Jones (probably wife of son Joseph), Amariah Frost, and Simeon Littlefield. Further proof of the second marriage is found in the bills submitted by the executor: 24 April 1753 journey to Sherborn to get mother Jones' quittance; August 1753 paid Mary Jones, widow of the deceased, to go off the place, 40 pounds.

Joseph spent his entire live on the home place of his father in the present town of Hopedale, Mass. The will of Joseph Jones was written 4 Sept. 1792 and mentions son, Joseph, Jr., of Milford, and his children by wife Ruth, of whom grandson David was to have the residue of the estate; son Jonathan and his children by wife Mary; son Timothy and his children by wife Ann; daughter Susannah, wife of John Robinson of Milford. When the will was first presented there were objections from some of the heirs; it was stated by them that Susannah was living in Rhode Island, and that Jonathan was living in Vermont and could not have heard the terms of the will.
