George W. Whitney, ROCKLEDGE, Fla.

  George W. Whitney, 79, of 1075 Hermosa Drive, formerly of New Salem, Mass., died Monday (12-3-01) in Wuesthoff Hospital.

Born in North Adams, Mass., Sept. 11, 1922, he was the son of John F. and Martha E. (Blackmer) Whitney. He graduated in 1940 from Orange (Mass.) High School.

Following graduation, he served with the Army Artillery Division in the European Theater of War during World War II.

For many years, Whitney operated a construction company in New Salem, Whitney Associates. The company built many of the barracks at Fort Devens and several drive-in movie theaters. He also operated the former Pioneer Drive-in Theater for several years. Upon moving to Florida in 1978, he became a construction consultant and chief inspector to Brevard County.

He was a member of American Legion Post 163 in Rockledge.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, the former Eloise R. Irisit; three sons, Joseph of Winchendon, Mass., Gary of Ellsworth, Maine, and Jeffrey of Athol, Mass; three stepsons, Steven Hickey of Port St. John, Stanley Hickey of Fitchburg, Mass., and Kenneth Hickey of Ocala; a stepdaughter, Sandra Hickey of Lagrange, Ohio; a brother, John of Suffield, Conn.; a sister, Abby Yonaites of Rice Lake, Wis.; 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

His first wife, the former Margaret Truman, died in 1973.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Witty's Funeral Home, 158 S. Main St., Orange, with the Rev. Lois S. Buchiane of the Community Church of North Orange and Tully officiating. Interment will follow in East Street Cemetery, Petersham.

Calling hour at the funeral home will be Tuesday from noon to time of service.
