He was born in Brunswick, Me., and during the French and Indian war in 1754 was taken prisoner to Quebec. He was sold for a certain sum. and released in 1761, after the war was over. There is a petition in the statehouse at Boston which he sent to the Great and General Court, praying for ransom. In the records of the First Baptist Church at New Meadows there is this entry: "Samuel WHITNEY, deacon, dismissed to a church to be gathered at St. John's. River, eastward." . . . . . Mary WHITNEY, wife of Deacon S. W., dismissed to St. John's River, October, 1765. It would be interesting to know if the town of Whitneyville resulted from this dismissal; res. -----, Me. 1536. i. He was born in the old town of York, Me., but moved to Brunswick with his parents at an early age. He settled in Bath, Me., and died there in his eighty-fourth year. He was captured by the Indians at New Meadows in Bath when but seventeen years of age. He was also a soldier in the Revolutionary war. He d. Nov. 1816; res. Bath, Me. 1539. AMOS, b. Apr. 18, 1766; m.
