John WHITNEY was born in Sherborn, but removed to Boston in 1795. He was a merchant, and continued in business until his death, in 1817. He was a worthy and respectable man. July 6, 1889, in New Bedford. Ch.: Charles Frederick, b. Lancaster, Mass., Dec. 6, 1836; m. April 10, 1861, Anna CRAIG. He studied at the Lawrence Scientific School, at Harvard, and abroad at the universities of Guettinger and Berlin, receiving in 1856 the degree of Ph. D. at Guettinger. On his return to the United States in 1857, he became assistant in Chemistry at Union college under Prof. Charles A. JOY, and a few months later succeeded to the duties of the full profes- sorship. Here he remained until 1864, when he went to New York and was associated with Professors EGLESTON and VINTON in the establishment of the Columbia School of Mines. Dr. CHANDLER was elected to fill the chair of analytical and applied chemistry, and was also dean of the faculty. In 1877, on the reorganization of the school, he was made professor of chemistry, lecturing thenceforth in both the literary and scientific depart- ments of Columbia. He became adjunct professor of chemistry and medical jurisprudence in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia in 1872, and in 1876 succeeded to the full
