Colonel Jonathan Hapgood (Sarah4 Whitney, Richard3, Richard2, John1), son of Capt. Hezekiah and Sarah4 (Whitney) Hapgood,[1] was born about 1732, Stow, MA,[2] and "Col." died 20 Mar 1801, Stow, MA, aged 68 years.

He married firstly, (int. 10 Jan 1755), Stow, MA, Ruth Walcutt, daughter of Jabez and Lydia (Flint) Walcutt. She was born 12 Dec 1737, Stow, MA, and died 17 Jan 1784, Stow, MA, in her 48th year.

He "Col." married secondly, 5 Oct 1784, Stow, MA, Sarah Whitney, who is currently unidentified. It seems likely that she was a widow. Possibly she could be the Sarah6 Whitney, daughter of Jeremiah5 and Elizabeth (Farr) Whitney, who was born 3 Apr 1752, Stow, MA. No death or remarriage for her has been found.

Hon. Jonathan Hapgood was a member of the MA legislature.

JONATHAN HAPGOOD appears among a list of field officers of the Mass. Militia as 1st Major in the 1st Middlesex County Regt., Col. Oliver Prescott in command. Commission dated Aug. 30, 1775 [Massachusetts Archives, Vol. 28, pages 87, 95].

JONATHAN HAPGOOD was chosen by Legislature Feb. 15, 1776, as 1st Major of Col. Henry Gardner's Regt. Commissioned in Council. This commission was declined [Massachusetts Archives, Vol. 41, page, 134].

JONATHAN HAPGOOD was chosen 1st Major of the 4th Middlesex County Regt. under command of Col. Ezekiel Howe. Commissioned May 10, 1776. This was a second appointment, the first having been declined [Massachusetts Archives, Vol. 28, pages 91, 104].

JONATHAN HAPGOOD appears in an official record of a ballot by the House of Representatives, Feb. 25, 1779, as Lieutenant-Colonel of 4th Regt. of Militia in Middlesex County, Col. Cyprian Howe, Commander. Appointment concurred in by the Council, Feb. 26, 1779 [Massachusetts Archives, Vol. 221, page 300].
