Family:Whitney, Alexander (1798-1859)

Alexander⁸ Whitney (Benjamin⁷, Lemuel⁶, Joshua⁵, Nathaniel⁴, Nathaniel³, John², John¹), son of Benjamin⁷ and Betsey (Bragg) Whitney, was born 21 Jun 1798, Springfield, VT,^[1] and died 30 Jane 1859, Essex, NY.

He married, 16 Jan 1823, Westport, NY, Sopronia Streeter. She was born 2 Oct 1803, and died 8 Apr 1871.

He was the eldest son of Benjamin and Betsey (Bragg) Whitney, was born in Springfield. He went to Essex, NY, in 1820, engaged in farming, married, and ever after resided there on the farm he purchased in 1820. He and his wife were members of the M. E. church. He was always a Democrat. He resided Essex, NY.

ii.	Orlando Barrett Whitney, b. 21 Jun 1826, Essex, NY; d. 21 Aug 1861. He was born in Essex, NY, and died of his wounds, a prisoner of war in Richmond, VA. He was orderly sergeant of Company K, 38th Regiment New York Volunteers.
iii.	Benjamin Austin Whitney, b. 6 Sep 1828, Essex, NY; d. 11 May 1858.
iv.	Elizabeth Whitney, b. 2 Jul 1831, Essex, NY; m. 24 Oct 1854, Philetus A. Merriam; resided Santa Anna, CA.
