Amos5 Whitney (Amos4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Amos4 and Sarah (Payne) Whitney, was born 22 Apr 1752, York, ME,[1] and died Dec 1806, Newburgh, ME.[2]

Marriage intentions were published 5 Oct 1776, Gorham, ME, for him and his first wife Anna Weston.[3] She was born 24 Oct 1756, Gorham, ME, and died between 1786 and 1790, probably Buxton, ME.

Marriage intentions were published 27 Jun 1790, Gorham, ME, for him "of Buxton" and his second wife Mary Smith.[4] Marriage intentions were published 31 Jul 1790 at Buxton, Maine for him and Mary Smith "of Gorham".[5] He "of Buxton" married secondly, 9 Sep 1790, Buxton, ME, Mary Smith "of Gorham".[6]

A little data on this family is in the Gorham, ME, Vital Records, but most of it is from towns for which we do not yet have VR extracts for the Whitney surname. The remainder comes from submission to Whitney-L maillist by Mary and Jack Landkamer <[email protected]>. He lived circa 1803 at Newburgh, ME.

Before 26 Feb 1807, administration was granted to Jeremiah Smith on the estate of Amos Whitney of Township #2 Range 1 north of Waldo Patent (later Newburgh), ME.

i. Mary6 Whitney, b. circa 1778; said to have married a Mr. Obear and moved to Michigan. Nothing else known.
ii. Ephraim Whitney, b. 1780; m. Keziah Moffatt.
iii. Robinson Whitney, b. circa 1782; m. Elsie/Elcy Chadbourne.
iv. Sarah Whitney, b. Jan 1783; d. 8 Mar 1857, Newburg, ME; m. ("of Number 2 Range 1" int. 10 Mar 1806, Hampden, ME "of Collegetown"[7]) 18 Apr 1806, Hampden, ME, John York. Died aged 74y, 2m. Buried in the Lufkin Cemetery, Newburg, ME. Birth date calculated from age at death. John York d. 25 Apr 1862, Newburg, ME, aged 79 years. Had daughters Jane, Nancy, and Mary E. and probably others not known at this time.
v. William Whitney, b. Apr 1786; m. Nancy Simpson.

Children of Amos5 and Mary (Smith) Whitney:

i. John6 Whitney, b. 1 May 1791; m. Betsey Fairbanks.
ii. Betsey Whitney, b. circa 1794, Buxton, ME; d. after 1808. Chose her guardian in 1808, nothing further known.
iii. Ruth Whitney, b. 9 Dec 1799, Buxton, ME; m. circa 1818, John Fairbanks. Lived at Dixmont, and had eight children.
