Family:Whitney, Andrew Jackson (1829-1913)
Andrew Jackson8 Whitney (Jonathan Wood7, Abraham6, Abraham5, Abraham4, Moses3, Richard2, John1), son of Jonathan Wood7 and Abigail (Brooks) Whitney, was born 31 Jan 1829, Stow, MA,[1] and died 3 Jun 1913, Rock Island, IL. He was buried in Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island, IL.[2]
He married firstly, 9 Aug 1852, Cuyahoga Co., OH, Lucretia Blodgett,[3] daughter of Theodore Blodgett. She was born about 1830, NY, and died 20 Dec 1864, Keokuk Co., IA.
He married secondly, 14 May 1867, Des Moines Co., IA, Kate E. Kelly.[4] She was born Dec 1839, Canada, and died 30 Apr 1912, Rock Island, IL. She was buried in Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island, IL.[5]
Captain Whitney was a steamboat owner who contractually hauled supplies and equipment for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers up and down the Mississippi. During a storm, his boat tore from its moorings and drifted downstream toward the Crescent Bridge. Since the crew had no steam up, they could only drop anchor. The anchor dragged and finally caught, bending in the process. Captain Whitney said later that the bent anchor "saved his bacon" that day, and it now rests on his grave.
