Benjamin5 Whitney (Benjamin4, John3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Benjamin4 and Mercy (Hinckley) Whitney, was born circa 1755-1769, and died at possibly Bowdoin, ME.

Marriage intentions were published 12 Nov 1795, Bowdoin, ME, for him "of Little River Plantation" and Polly Varnum.[1] Marriage intentions were published 12 Nov 1795, Topsham, ME, for him "Jr." "of Little River Plantation" and Polly Varnum "of Bowdoin".[2] He married Mary Varnum. She was born circa 1774 at probably Bowdoin, ME. She was also known as Polly Varnum.

He was also known as Benjamin Whitney, Jr. "Settled in Bowdoin, Me." (Pierce "Whitney Genealogy", p. 62).

Children of Benjamin5 and Mary (Varnum) Whitney, all born Bowdoin, ME:

i. Ralph6 Whitney, b. 24 Dec 1797.[3]
ii. Abigail Whitney, b. 6 May 1800;[4] m. William Hilton.

("Miss Margaret" int. 15 Jul 1824, Bowdoinham, ME, "Mr."[7]) 8 Aug 1824, Bowdoinham, ME, "Mr." Ebenezer Beals "of Bowdoinham",[8] b. 2 Feb 1790, Bowdoinham, ME, d. 9 Feb 1852, Bowdoinham, ME. viii. (prob.) Samuel Whitney, b. ca. 1812, ME; m.(1) Elizabeth Merryman; m.(2) Louisa Jordan.

Notes

If the first Samuel Whitney, b. 1801, died, then there could be a second Samuel, b. ca. 1812. In the 1850 census, the latter is living with a Susan Whitney, b. ca. 1821, likely his sister-in-law Susan (Trufant) Whitney, widow of Stover6 Whitney, and a Mary Whitney, b. ca. 1776, likely his mother. That Mary may well be Mary/Polly (Varnum) Whitney above. The fact that that Samuel named a daughter Diana seems significant.
