Family:Whitney, Daniel (1746-1784)

Daniel⁵ Whitney (Daniel⁴, Henry³, John², Henry¹), son of Daniel⁴ and Thankful (Burt) Whitney, was born 12 Jan 1745/6, Ridgefield, CT,^[1] and died Jun 1784, Warwick, NY.

He married about 1766, Warwick, NY, Martha Burt, daughter of Daniel and Hannah (Benedict) Burt. She was born 3 Apr 1743, Ridgefield, CT, and died 29 May 1817, Big Flats, NY.

Phoenix says the following:

Daniel Whitney, b. at Ridgefield, Conn., 12 Jan. 1745-6; a farmer; married about 1766, at Warwick, N.Y., his cousin, Martha Burt, born at Ridgefield, 3 Ap. 1743, dau. of Daniel and Hannah (Benedict) Burt, of Warwick. They dwelt at Warwick Village. He is known to have been in the army in 1780, and served to the end of the war of the Revolution, and was, it is said, a Captain. In the Spring of 1784, he went to the Wyoming region, in Penn., and bought a thousand acres of land, on which to settle; and died in June of the same year, from over-exertion, when not fully recovered from an attack of measles. His widow moved, with her children, to Big Flats, N.Y., and died there, 29 May 1817, at the house of her daughter, Mrs. Martha (Whitney) Snow. She was buried in a family-cemetery, laid out on their farm, now owned by James Whitney, on the Sing Sing Creek, in the town of Big Flats, nine miles north-west of Elmira. She was a member of the Baptist Church.

The abstract of his will reads as follows:

In the name of God, Amen. I, DANIEL WHITNEY, of Worrick in "Orring" County, New York, being in perfect healthe of body. I leave to Martha my dearly beloved wife, all my estate to use at her pleasure during the term she may remain my widow, and if she should marry again I do mean that after my debts are paid out of my moveable estate the remainder to be hers forever; Also I do mean that my lands shall be divided between my two sons Thomas and Aaron. Thomas shall have two acres of land and the house that I now live in adjoing to Aguston Rogerses land. (No mention of Aaron's share). My executors shall put my sons to a trade at a fit age. Thomas shall have a Blacksmith Trade, and Aaron a Tanner and currier and shoemakers. My sons shall provide for their mother a sufficient room to live in, that is comfortable and fit for her, and shall jointly provide for her twelve bushels of wheat and ten of corn yearly, and that they shall not sell any land without consent of their mother except they sell to one another; and that they shall give to each of their sisters one cow to be "prised att five pounds as in 1775"; and that my sons shall proved firewood for their mother and one cow. I make my wife Martha and her brother Daniel Burt, sole executors.

Dated April 25, 1780. Witnesses, Daniel Burt, Jr., James Burt, of Goshen, yeomen. Proved, Orange County, December 23, 1784. Confirmed, New York, January 3, 1785.^[2]

Note that son Moses is not mentioned, suggesting a birth date after 1780.

ii.	Huldah Whitney, b. 6 Jan 1769, Warwick, NY; m. Stephen Bailey.
iii.	Pruella Whitney, b. 1771, Warwick, NY; m. John Durham.
iv.	Aaron Whitney, b. 12 Apr 1774, Warwick, NY; m. Judith Barlow.
v.	Moses Whitney, b. about 1777, Warwick, NY; m. Phebe Schoonover.
vi.	Hannah Whitney, b. about 1779, Warwick, NY; m. about 1797, at the log-house of her brother, Thomas Whitney, near Newtown, NY, by Rev. David Jayne, Baptist, to James Moody. They lived about nine miles north-west of Elmira, on a farm occupied by James Whitney, in Feb. 1875. She died at Big Flats, NY, about 1818, aged 39 years, and was buried in the family cemetery on their farm.
vii.	Martha Whitney, b. Oct 1784, Warwick, NY; m. 1800, when sixteen years old, at the log-house of her brother, Thomas Whitney, near Newtown, now Elmira, NY, Ebenezer Snow, a farmer, who was but three years older. They settled at Big Flats, NY, and there died; he, about 1850; she, 30 Oct. 1864. They were buried in the Baptist Cemetery, nine miles north-west of Elmira. They were members of the Baptist Church. They had one child, who died young.
