Family:Whitney, Ebenezer E. (1841-1909)

Ebenezer E.⁸ Whitney (Ebenezer⁷, Ebenezer⁶, Zachariah⁵, Zachariah⁴, Ebenezer³, Richard², John¹), son of Ebenezer⁷ and Dianna (Hildreth) Whitney, was born 22 Mar 1841, Leverett, MA, and died 4 Jun 1909, Montague, MA, aged 68 years 2 months 13 days, of pneumonia.^[1]

He married firstly, 8 Feb 1866, Deerfield, MA, Amanda J. (Rice) Remington, both of Deerfield, daughter of David L. and Freelove (Parker) Rice.^[2] She was born about 14 Dec 1840, Montague, MA, and died 25 Sep 1881, at home in Montague, MA, aged 40 years 9 months 11 days, cause not given, born in Montague, daughter of David L. Rice.^[3] She had married firstly, 1 May 1855, Deerfield, MA, James F. Remington, son of James Remington.

He married secondly, 13 Nov 1897, Montague, MA, Julia Ann (Johnson) Russell, daughter of William C. and Elizabeth R. (Russell) Johnson.^[4] She was born 20 Nov 1876, Wendell, MA,^[5] and died after 1910. She had married firstly, 28 Dec 1886 (see notes below), North Leverett, MA, Nelson Russell, son of Peter and Jane (-----) Russell, born about 1860, Fort Covington, NY, as his second wife.^[6] By Nelson Russell she had a daughter Julia or Emma M. Russell, born 22 Nov 1890, Montague, MA.^[7] That daughter was living with her maternal grandparents in the 1900 census, Montague, MA.

He resided Montague, MA.

ii.	Cora Ada Whitney, b. 8 Jul 1870, West Brookfield, MA;[11] m. 20 Oct 1886, Athol, MA [also recorded at Montague, MA], Herman H/M. Newton, b. ca. 1867, Leverett, MA, son of Horace and Melissa (-----) Whitney.[12] She does not appear in Ebenezer's family in the 1870 or 1880 censuses.
iii.	Hattie D. Whitney, b. 21 Nov 1872, or 26 Nov 1872, Blandford, MA;[13] m. 13 Apr 1889, Hinsdale, NH, Frank A. Bragg.[14]

Notes

Julia Ann Johnson's age seems impossible for a marriage in 1886. Nevertheless, the records seem clear on this point. Her age on the marriage record is given as 12, although she was only 10. All other data about her agrees with this reconstruction. Her daughter was born when she was 14, which seems quite young.
