Francis Marion⁸ Whitney (James⁷, Jonathan⁶, Jonathan⁵, James⁴, Joseph³, Jonathan², John¹), son of James⁷ and Mary (Helms) Whitney, was born 4 May 1861, Sciola, IA.

He married, 19 Nov 1882, Hattie B. Chandler. She was born 28 Jun 1864.

He was born in Montgomery County, IA, and remained on the farm of his father until he was eighteen years of age, when he taught school for three years. When twenty-one years of age he engaged in business on his own account at Sciola, and after three years moved to Cumberland where he is engaged in general merchandising; resided Sciola, IA, and Cumberland, IA.
