Frank Stoughten⁸ Whitney (Charles Henry⁷, Milton⁶, Asa⁵, Joshua⁴, William³, Joshua², John¹), son of Charles Henry⁷ and Elvira (Sheldon) Whitney, was born 7 Jan 1845, Pittsfield, OH, and died 18 Mar 1896, Billings, MT. He was buried in Mountview Cemetery, Billings, MT.^[1]

He married, 29 May 1870, Cheyenne, WY, Margaret Orilla Karns. She was born 3 Jan 1850, IA, died 12 Jul 1922. She was buried in Mountview Cemetery, Billings, MT.^[2]

He was a farmer; resided Junction, Montana.

Junction, Montana is a ghost town, previously located just across the river from Custer, MT. See Junction City & Fort Pease, including the documents "The Passing of a Once Noted Place" and "Junction City, Haven of Bullwhackers, Trappers and Soldiers".

His obituary, from the Yellowstone Valley Recorder, Billings, MT, 25 March 1896:

"In Memoriam--Wednesday evening Frank S. Whitney, whose long illness has been a subject of much anxiety and solicitude to his host of friends in Billings, passed quietly away to his eternal rest. He had been a gentle sufferer for months of his mortal illness, ever jovial and hopeful, never a moment allowing his wife and children to see that he was depressed or fearful. His conduct throughout that of a Spartan, hiding the gnawing at his vitals which he must have known meant his ultimate death rather than sharpen the grief of his loved ones.

"His funeral was conducted on Friday afternoon by the Masonic brethren with whom he fraternized; an escort of honor for their dead comrade being furnished by Aldemar Commandery, K.T., of which he was a member, though the services were according to the ritual of the Blue or subordinate lodge. Hundreds of bereaved friends attended the church services and made the pilgrimage to the cemetery to see their old friend laid away.

"Frank S. Whitney was born in Ohio in 1845 and was in his 52nd year at the time of his death. He came west in 1866 and held many positions of honor in Wyoming and Montana. At the time of his death he was completing his two-year term as assessor of Yellowstone county. He was a stout, uncompromising republican and a steadfast friend. Never fortunate in business yet he had none of that bitterness ill success frequently genders.

"He was married in 1868 at Cheyenne to Miss Orilla Karns, who bore him four children, three of whom are yet alive, two stalwart young men and a helpful little girl.

"Frank S. Whitney was universally liked by his associates and was energetic and pronounced his own likes and dislikes. He was a civil war veteran and pioneer who for thirty years had pitted his arm and brain against the adversities of life on the frontier. His last resting place is hallowed by the tears of his stricken family, honored in his memory."^[3]
