George W. Whitney (George W.), son of George W. and Mary (Van Wie) Whitney), was born 1839, OH, and died 1879. He was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Fredonia, NY.^[1]

He married Katherine Cunningham. She was born 1850, Ireland, and died 19 Jul 1905. She was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Fredonia, NY.^[2].

He enlisted at Dunkirk, NY, 28 May 1861. as a Private in the 6th New York Light Artillery, but was transferred to Co. D, 72nd New York Infantry, and was discharged 20 Jun 1864.

On 20 Mar 1880, his widow Catharine applied for a pension based on his service. The application number is 261,859, and the certificate number is 258,326.^[3]
