Howell de Whitney, parentage unknown, born sometime in or before 1368,[1] died sometime after 1412.[2]

He married, in or before 1389, Katherine Serle, daughter of Vivian Serle.[3]

On 13 Jan 1388/9, Nicholas de Audley was licensed by the King, to enfeoff Howell de Whitney/Whyteney, and Katherine, daughter of Vivian Serle, and their heirs, of 1 messuage, 60 acres of land, 4 acres of meadow, 20 acres of pasture, and 16 acres of land, 4 acres of meadow, 20 acres of pasture, and 16 acres of wood in Conele [prob. Cowele] and Aston, near Bromhall, Chester.[4]

In 17 Richard II (1393 or 1394), "Howel de Whyteney and Katherine his wife" were involved in a dower. "Audelegh, Elizabeth who was the wife of Nicholas de, of Helegh, Kt., against Howel de Whyteney and Katherine his wife. Dower of one messuage, a hundred acres of land, six acres of meadow, ten acres of wood, and ten acres of turbary in Cowele and Aston near Bromale. [17 & 18 Ric. 2. m. 24 d.]"[5]

On 27 Dec 1397, Howell de Whitney/Whyteney was appointed by the King as one of the yeomen of the livery of the Crown, with 6d. a day for life. A note in the margin reads "sagittarius de corona" (archer of the crown = royal archer?)[6]

Howell de Whitney appears to have lived in Cheshire, perhaps at Coole Pilot.[7]

Apparently he was the founder of the Cheshire branch of the Whitney family.

Children of Howell and Katherine (Serle) de Whitney, if any, are unknown.
