James Volney⁸ Whitney (Curtis Russell⁷, Silas⁶, Aaron⁵, Samuel⁴, Richard³, John², Henry¹), son of Curtis Russell⁷ and Rhoda (Hawkins) Whitney, was born 1841, Superior, MI, and died 25 Nov 1907, Olive, MI.^[1]

He married, Frances McLoud/McLeod, daughter of John H. and Rachel (Firestone) McLeod. She was born about 1847, or Oct 1841, PA, and died 12 Mar 1897, Bengal, MI. She was buried in Wilsey Cemetery, DeWitt, MI.^[2]

Phoenix says the following:

". . . a trader . . . . They were living at DeWitt, Mich., in March 1874."
