John Brooks7 Whitney (Jacob6, Abner5, Jonas4, Eleazer3, Thomas2, John1), son of Jacob6 and Lucy (Adams) Whitney, was born 19 Sep 1820, or 8 Jul 1821, New Salem, MA,[1] and died 18 Mar 1876, Milwaukee, WI, aged 56 years 6 months, of dropsy of heart.[2]

He "of Shelburne" married firstly, 15 May 1844, Shelburne Falls, MA, Lucinda Bardwell, daughter of Hubbard B. Bardwell of Pawtucket.[3] She was born in Leyden, MA, and died 14 May 1857, Shelburne, MA, aged 34 years 11 months 22 days, of consumption.[4]

He married secondly, 16 Dec 1857, Shelburne Falls, MA, Katherine A. Pratt, daughter of Josiah and C. (-----) Pratt.[5] She was born 28 Mar 1833, Charlemont, MA.

John Brooks, son of Jacob and Lucy Adams Whitney, was born at New Salem, MA; was educated at Shelburne Falls (Massachusetts) academy, and was married at Shelburne Falls to Lucinda Bardwell, by whom he had four children. Resided at same place until 1874. Was a merchant, manufacturer and builder, and held important town offices. In 1852 served as representative in the legislature. Married Katherine A. Pratt in 1857, by whom he had three children. Removed with his family to Chicago in 1874, and died at Milwaukee, WI. He died 18 Mar 1876; resided Shelburne Falls, MA, Milwaukee, WI, she resided 1757 Oakdale Ave., Chicago, IL.

He sold land in New Salem, MA, in 1844.[6]

He was a merchant, she a seamstress.

iii. Lucy Elizabeth Whitney, b. 27 May 1849, Shelburne, MA;[11] "Lizzie" m. 17 Jan 1871, Shelburne, MA, Franklin A/E. Snow, b. ca. 1850, Colrain, MA, son of Newell and Jane (-----) Snow;[12] resided Greenfield, MA.
iv. Lydia Anna Whitney, b. 6 Feb 1852, Shelburne, MA [given name omitted].[13] Teacher of piano at Vassar college, Poughkeepsie, NY.
