John Linus Whitney, parentage unknown, was born say 1822, and died 1850. No death record has been found.

He married, say 1848, Mary Amanda Whitlock, daughter of John and Lucy Esther (Starr) Whitlock. She was born about 1825, said 10 May 1825, CT, and died 10 Jan 1905, Marion, IN, aged 79 years 8 months, of chronic dysentery.[1] She was buried in Ansonia, OH.

She married secondly, between 1865 and 1870, Daniel B. Shattuck, son of Abner and Lydia Abbot (Batchelder) Shattuck. He was born 20 Dec 1821, Temple, NH, and died 4 Jan 1895, Greenville, OH. He had married firstly, 3 Jun 1847, Oppenheim, NY, Elizabeth Margaret Robinson.

"John Linus Whitney, killed by a robber when John was on his way back home from the gold fields in California. His bag of gold, worth $75,000, was stolen. His wife, the former Mary Amanda Whitlock of Ct., while waiting for him in New York State, gave birth, posthumously to their son, John Linus Whitney; born 14 Dec., 1850. Need information on this family. Somewhere between 1850 and 1859, Mary Amanda Whitlock Whitney married Daniel Shattuck (from New Hampshire). These two moved to Darke Co., Ohio with Mary Amanda's father, John Whitlock and his wife. With them were a James Whitlock and wife Sarah. This James was about 15 years younger than Mary Amanda, so this may have been her brother (unless her father had married twice)."[2]

Children of John Linus and Mary Amanda (Whitlock) Whitney:

i. John Linus Whitney, b. 14 Dec 1850, NY (posthumous); m. Margaret K. Replogle.

Notes

Daniel B. Shattuck was also a Whitney descendant. His line is Daniel B., Abner, Abraham, Jeremiah, Jeremiah, Samuel, Ruth3 (Whitney) Shattuck, John2, John1.

Daniel B. Shattuck (indexed as "David B. Shattuck") was listed as widowed in the 1865 New York state census, Oppenheim, NY, so he must have made his second marriage after that, location unknown. He and his first wife had four children: Sarah Rosalinda, James Abner, John Milton, and Jane Elizabeth "Jennie". Only Jennie is found in Ohio (and later Indiana).
