John Veits6 Whitney (Samuel Platt5, Uriah4, Nathan3, John2, Henry1), son of Samuel Platt5 and Martha (Hart)(Owen) Whitney, was born 31 Dec 1816, East Granville, MA, and died after 1874.

He married, 25 Mar 1845, Granville, OH, Mary (Lansing) Graves, daughter of John Evert and Betsey (Canfield) Lansing. She was born 9 Oct 1822, Castleton, NY, and died after 1874. She had married firstly, Sylvester Bela Graves, of Granville, OH.

Phoenix says the following:

"John Veits Whitney, b. at East Granville, Mass., 31 Dec. 1816; married by Rev. Henry Carr, Baptist, at Granville, Ohio, 25 March 1845, to Mary Lansing, born at Castleton, N.Y., 9 Oct. 1822, dau. of John Evert and Betsey (Canfield) Lansing, and widow of Sylvester Bela Graves, of Granville, Ohio. He lives in Montville, Ohio, on the homestead of his father, who resided with him. He has taught school for eighteen years; practised surveying, twenty-five years; been county commissionner of Geauga Co., six years; county school examiner, twenty-one years; trustee and clerk of Montville, ten years; and justice of the peace, five years. He was elected trustee of the township for the purpose of raising funds to fill their quota of soldiers, in the war of 1861. He has cultivated an extensive nursery for ten years, and is now senior partner in the firm of John V. Whitney & Son, proprietors of the Green Valley Nurseries, in Montville, and has besides a large and valuable farm."

Canfield Lansing Whitney, b. 28 Jan 1848, Montville, OH; m. 11 Nov 1872, Barton, OH, Roseltha May White, dau. of James and Rosanna (Phillips) White; b. 16 Mar 1854, Middlefield, OH; nurseryman, and teacher. He resided Montville, OH, 1874, and was then the managing partner of the firm of John V. Whitney & Son, proprietors of the Green Valley Nurseries. He has taught in a public school, one term each year, for ten years.
iii. Fiorello Whitney, b. 19 Dec 1849, Montville, OH; d. 27 Jan 1868, Montville, OH; bur. Montville Centre, OH.
iv. Frank Alberto Whitney, b. 26 Sep 1851, Montville, OH; d. 10 Aug. 1873, Montville, OH; unmarried; was a partner with his father and brother, in the Green Valley Nurseries at Montville; bur. Montville Centre, OH.
v. Worrallo Whitney, b. 13 Aug 1858, Montville, OH.
vi. Nira Estella Whitney, b. 6 Aug 1860, Montville, OH.
vii. Franz Sigel Whitney, b. 2 Dec 1862, Montville, OH.
viii. Ella Frances Whitney, b. 29 Apr 1865, Montville, OH.
