Joseph5 Whitney (Joseph4, Joseph3, Jonathan2, John1), son of Joseph4 and Abigail (Nutting) Whitney, was born 20 or 23 Oct 1755, Pepperell, MA,[1], baptized 26 Oct 1755, Pepperell, MA, and died 1820, Acworth, NH.

He "Jr." married, 14 Jun 1780, Pepperell, MA, Mary Woods, daughter of Isaac and Mary (Woods) Woods. She was born 1 Dec 1764, and died 1841, Acworth, NH.

Pierce says the following:[2]

He was from Pepperell, Mass., served in the Revolutionary army, and was at the battle of Bunker Hill. Later he removed to Acworth, N.H., in 1807. Apr. 25, 1818, he was granted a pension, but it was suspended in 1820.

From the History of Francestown, N. H.:

JOSEPH WHITNEY, doubtless came here with James, and perhaps lived with him. In the records of Pepperell, we find: Joseph, son of Joseph and Abigail Whitney, born Oct. 23, 1755, James, son of Joseph and Abigail Whitney, born Dec. 6, 1757. In a record of deaths in this town, we learn that James Whitney died here Feb. 16, 1831, aged seventy-three years, which leads us to conclude that Joseph and James were brothers, and natives of Pepperell, Mass. A child of Joseph was buried hiere in 1790.[3]
