Family:Whitney, Joseph (1793-1841)

Capt. Joseph Whitney (Ebenezer), son of Ebenezer and Nancy (Bliss) Whitney, was born 9 Mar 1793, Belchertown, MA,[1] and died 11 Oct 1841 aged 49 years. He was buried in the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lewiston, NY.[2]

He married, about 1819, Mary Cooley, daughter of James and Amy (Dean) Cooley. She was born 18 Dec 1796, Rhinebeck Flats, NY, and died 1 Sep 1879, aged 82 years. She was buried in the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lewiston, NY.[3]

Widow Mary Whitney applied for a pension based on the War of 1812 service of her husband, Joseph Whitney, in the U.S. Navy. Widow's Original, # 23,394; Widow's Cert. # 16,959.

"The following named individuals and firms were directly or indirectly connected with the portage between Lewiston and Lake Erie: ... John T. Trowbridge and Captain Joseph Whitney were owners of the schooner 'Mary Ann.'"[4] This was between 1820 and 1840, and the portage was to carry goods around Niagara Falls and the rapids of the Niagara River.
