At the time of his enlistment, he was eighteen years old, with dark hair, black eyes, dark complexion, and occupation farmer. Since the date of his discharge, Joseph had resided the first five years at Jackson County, Township of Rives, Michigan, then in Carlton, Barry Co., Michigan about fourteen years; then in Dwight, Livingston Co., Illinois for 2 years; and since then in Carlton, Barry Co., Michigan. Joseph Whitney, parentage unknown but perhaps son of Daniel Whitney or Family:Whitney, Benjamin (1764-a1821), was born circa 1793, Fort Ann, Washington Co., NY, and died 27 Apr 1875, Carlton, Barry Co., MI.

He married, firstly, Betsey Hutchinson. She died Apr 1837, Jackson, MI.

He married, secondly, 18 Jun 1837, Stronsville, OH, Jane Potter. She was born circa 1799, NY, and died after 1880, probably Barry Co., MI. She had previously been married to Lyman Franklin, who died ca. 1831, Fort Ann, NY.

ii. George Whitney, b. 12 Apr 1828, Parma, Cuyahoga Co., OH. He m. Margaret McMannes. 8 children.
George Whitney was born in the town of Parma, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, April 12, 1828. He was the son of Joseph Whitney, and was reared on a farm, obtaining a common school education. Upon attaining his majority he commenced life for himself. In 1837 the family came to Michigan and settled in Jackson County, where the elder Whitney purchased a farm. Here he resided six years; then came to Carlton, where he resided until his death, which occurred in 1875. Mr. Whitney’s first venture in business was in manufacturing shingles; he then went into a saw-mill, in which vocation he became an expert; for eleven years he was in the employ of Ryerson & Hills, proprietors of the Bay Mill, at Muskegon; he worked for this firm eleven years without the loss of a day. In 1876 he came to Hastings, and purchased the farm on which he now resides, a view of which we present on another page. in 1854 he was married to Miss Margaret McMannes, of Grand Rapids; they have an interesting family of eight children.[1]
