Joshua4 Whitney (David3, Joshua2, John1), son of David3 and Elizabeth (Warren) Whitney,[1] was born 11 Oct 1718, Plainfield, CT,[2] and died 10 Feb 1761, Plainfield, CT.[3]

He married 8 Apr 1742, Amy Blodgett,[4] daughter of William and Sarah (Hall) Blodgett.[5] She was born 16 Feb 1724, Plainfield, CT,[6] and died 24 Dec 1819, Canaan, CT, aged 96 years.[7]

She married secondly, after 14 Nov 1767, Isaac Lawrence,[8] son of Daniel and Sarah (-----) Lawrence,[9] as his second wife. He was born 25 Feb 1704/5, Groton, MA,[10] and died 2 Dec 1793, Canaan, CT.[11] He had married firstly Lydia Hewitt.[12]

She married thirdly, about 1798, George Palmer,[13] son of George and Hannah (Palmer) Palmer,[14] as his second wife. He was born 6 Sep 1719, Stonington, CT,[15] and died 1 Dec 1809, Stillwater, NY.[16] He had married firstly Hannah Marsh.[17]

Pierce says the following:[18]

He was born in Groton, Mass. and removed to Plainfield, Conn. with his parents, where he resided until his removal to Preston, Conn. The tradition in the family is that he was a soldier in the French and Indian war, and that about 1759 he was killed by Indians near Oswego, N.Y. Feb. 17, 1759, he was dead, for at that time his son Joshua chose Col. David WHITNEY of Canaan, as his guardian.

Pierce must have the date wrong here, for several reasons. First of all, the vital records show 10 Feb 1761 for Joshua's death. Secondly, the family record says 10 Feb 1762 or 1761, the latter date agreeing with the vital records. Thirdly, this couple had TWO children who could not have been conceived before 17 Feb 1759. Fourthly, Joshua, Jr., was only not quite 9 years old then, too young to have chosen a guardian, for which one had to be at least 12 years old. The original record of this will have to be found and examined to discover its true date.
