Family:Whitney, Joshua (1758-1850)

Joshua⁶ Whitney (Joshua⁵, Nathaniel⁴, Nathaniel³, John², John¹), son of Joshua⁵ and Mehitable (Wilson) Whitney,^[1] was born 11 Nov 1758, Spencer, MA,^[2], and died 18 Nov 1850, Pike, Allegany County, NY, but gravestone says 9 Dec 1849, aged 90 years. He was buried in Pike Cemetery, Pike, NY.^[3]

He married firstly, 7 Jun 1781, Spencer, MA, Esther Prouty.^[4] She was born 11 Jun 1764, Spencer, MA, and died in Langdon, NH.

He married secondly, 30 Oct 1794, Langdon, NH, Electa Sawtell,^[5] daughter of Obadiah and Elizabeth (Adams) Sawtell. She was born 17 Apr 1776, Charlestown, NH, and died 22 Jan 1855, Pike, NY. She was buried in Pike Cemetery, Pike, NY.^[6]

Joshua Whitney settled in Langdon, NH, where he buried his first wife; then moved to Cavendish, VT, where he married Miss Sawtell. From there he went to the Genesee river in New York, and located at Pike in 1815. Served in the war of the Revolution two years from Spencer, MA, in the company from that town; was in two battles previous to the capture of Burgoyne, and was present at his surrender.

Washington Whitney, of East Middletown, Dane County, WI, and Dr. Joshua Whitney, of Emmettsburg, IA, are descendants of Joshua and Electa. He resided Spencer, MA, Langdon and Dalton, NH, Cavendish, VT, and Pike, NY.
