Luther6 Whitney (Daniel5, Daniel4, Jonathan3, Jonathan2, John1), son of Daniel5 and Katy (Stone) Whitney, was born 23 Feb 1781, Marlborough, MA,[1] and died 8 Jun 1822, Madrid, NY. He was buried in Madrid, NY.

He married, about 1802, Hannah Whitney, parentage unknown. She was born 27 Dec 1777, MA, and died 8 Feb 1876, Toledo, OH.

Luther Whitney and his family removed from Adams, Massachusetts, to Madrid, New York, and later to Fairfield, New York. The highest point in New York State is near Fairfield on the old Whitney farm, where it is designated by a marker. Luther Whitney was a soldier in the War of 1812. She, as a widow, removed to Ohio in 1832, and died at Toledo 8 February 1876. Her parentage has not been traced.[2]

Children of Luther6 and Hannah (Whitney) Whitney:

i. Catherine7 Whitney, b. 8 Dec 1803, Adams, MA; d. young.
ii. Roxanna Whitney, b. 30 Oct 1805, Adams, MA; d. 9 Jul 1887, Elyria, OH; m. 25 Dec 1825, Madrid, NY, Admiral Nelson Gray.
iii. Maria Whitney, b. 28 Jul 1807, Madrid, NY; d. 1823.
iv. Chandler L. Whitney, b. 1 Jun 1809, Madrid, NY; m. Marcia Pomeroy.
v. Hannah Whitney, b. 16 Aug 1812, Potsdam, NY; d. 1826.
vi. Emily Whitney, b. 28 Jun 1814, Fairfield, NY; d. 1862, Lincoln, NE; m. 25 Feb 1836, Cuyahoga Vo., OH, Sylvanus Graves Gaylord, son of Thomas and Betsy (Butler) Gaylord. For their issue see The Nebraska and Midwest Genealogical Record, vol. 4, p. 242.
vii. Luther Whitney, b. 8 Apr 1817, Fairfield, NY; m.(1) Louisa Amelia Wood; m.(2) Elizabeth J. Cane/Caine.

Notes

Hannah Whitney, the wife above, may have been the daughter of Isaac5 and Mary (Tombs) Whitney of Holliston, MA, and Stamford, VT, who was baptized 15 Feb 1778, Holliston, MA. This is just a guess, based on date of birth and similarity of names. How she might have met Luther, of Adams, MA, is unknown.
