Neville Ely9 Whitney (Robert Shaw8, Albert Appleton7, Appleton Downer6, Asa5, Joshua4, William3, Joshua2, John1), son of Robert Shaw8 and Emily (Hicks) Whitney, was born 23 Oct 1860, in Brighton or Wellington, OH, and died 3 May 1920, Hazel Crest, Thornton Township, IL.

He married, 11 Sep 1883, Chicago, IL, Sarah Ellen Cornish, daughter of John E. and Julia (Shean) Cornish. She was born 17 Mar 1862, IA, and died 11 Jun 1911, Chicago, IL.

"He was a carpenter; resided Burnside Crossing, Cook County, IL, s.p."

Neville worked as a carpenter like many men in his family. He may have held a job with the railroad when he moved with his family to Pullman Village in Chicago. In his later years he took up work as a farmer and grocer in Hazel Crest, a town over from his younger brother Salmon in Homewood.

He and Sarah had no known children. He was known fondly as "Uncle Nev" by his nieces and nephews.
