Family:Whitney, Sidney Stearns (1815-1847)

Sidney Stearns7 Whitney (Samuel6, Elijah5, Abraham4, Isaiah3, Thomas2, John1), son of Samuel6 and Lucy (Handley) Whitney, was born 25 Feb 1815, Bolton, MA, and died 22 Dec 1847, Mexico.

He married, 5 Apr 1838, New Bedford, MA (also recorded in Boston, MA[1]), Mary C. Getchell, daughter of Benjamin and Polly (Blodgdon) Getchell. She was born 3 Jan 1820, North Anson, ME, and died 22 Feb 1865, Watertown, MA, widow, aged 44 years 1 month, of cancer.[2] She married secondly, 1849-1850, George Hartwell (1814-a1892), son of William and Mary (Lake) Hartwell.

Sidney S. Whitney alias Frederick Whitney served as a Private in Co. I, 1st Massachusetts Volunteers, in the Mexican War. He died 22 Dec 1847, Mexico. For this service, his former widow Mary C. Hartwell and minor children Francis A., Frederick A., and Charles D. Whitney applied for a pension, Certificate Nos. 1726 and 170, File No. 14,143. Bounty land was granted, warrant no. 60421-160-1847.[3]

Children of Sidney Stearns7 and Mary C. (Getchell) Whitney:

i. Frances A. P. Whitney, b. 5 Jul 1839, New Bedford, MA; m.(1) 17 Jan 1858, Chelsea, MA, Nahum Marshall, son of Jonathan and Mehitable (Lofkin) Marshall, b. ca. 17 Jan 1833, Claremont or Unity, NH,[4] d. 3 May 1908, Malden, MA, aged 75 years 3 months 16 days, widower.[5] Her death record has not been found. They were living in Cambridge, MA, in 1880. They have not been found in the 1900 census. According to Pierce, she m. Charles F. Retchel and resided Cliftondale, MA, but nothing to confirm this has been found, either.
ii. Frederick A. Whitney, b. 20 Feb 1841, New Bedford, MA; unmarried.
iii. Charles D.8 Whitney, b. 6 Apr 1844, New Bedford, MA [given name omitted];[6] m. Hannah S. Eaton.
