Family:Whitney, Stephen (1733-1811)
Stephen4 Whitney (Josiah3, John2, Henry1), son of John2 and Elizabeth (Smith) Whitney,[1] was born 10 Feb 1732/3, Norwalk, CT,[2] and died Jun 1811, Derby, CT.[3]
He married firstly, Derby, CT, Sarah Wheeler,[4] daughter of Capt. James and Sarah (Johnson) Wheeler.[5] She was born 27 Dec 1737, Derby, CT,[6] and died 31 Mar 1764, Derby, CT.[7]
He married secondly, 5 Nov 1764, Derby, CT, Eunice Keeney,[8] daughter of Ebenezer and Betty (Davis) Keeney.[9] She was born 31 Aug 1743, Derby, CT,[10] and died after 1774.[11]
He married thirdly, Hannah (Hull) Morse,[12] possibly daughter of Samuel and Anna (Riggs) Hull.[13] She was born possibly 11 May 1737, Derby, CT,[14] and died about 1793-1794, Derby, CT.[15] She had married firstly, ----- Morse.[16]
Phoenix says the following:[17]
- ... chose Jonathan Fairchild, of Norwalk, as his guardian, 1 Aug. 1749; settled in Derby, Conn., where he married Sarah Wheeler, .... She owned the covenant in the Congregational Church at Derby, 10 June 1759, died at Derby, 31 March 1764, and was buried in the old cemetery in Derby, where her gravestone sets forth her various relationships. He married (2d), at Derby, 5 Nov. 1764, Eunice Keeney. They owned the covenant in Derby, 6 Oct. 1765. She was probably a widow, and mother of William Keeney. He married (3d), Hannah Hull, widow of ----- Morse. She died in Derby, about 1793 or 1794.
- He was largely engaged in the West India trade, and at the end of the Revolution, found that nearly the whole of his possessions consisted of a big chest nearly filled with paper currency, which had so depreciated that he could realize nothing from it. He then went at his business anew, and had gained a modest competence a second time, when the sinking of a brig, the cargo of which belonged to him, brought him to poverty once more; after which he made a living, in his old age, by trading in a small way in the town about Derby. He came home from his last trip on a borrowed horse, having been, for three or four days, too ill to walk; and, on reaching home, was so ill that his family had to help him from the horse to his bed, where he died on the same night, at half past one o'clock, in Jun 1811.

i. Samuel5 Whitney, b. 15 or 24 Mar 1759, Derby, CT;[18] bapt. 10 Jun 1759, Derby, CT;[19] m. 31 Jan 1793, Derby, CT, Esther Smith. The land-records show his residence in Derby, 9 Ap. 1792, and at various dates down to 7 March 1809. He died without children.[20] ii. Isaac Whitney, b. 17 Nov 1761, Derby, CT;[21] m. Betsey Waterman or Whitmore. iii. James Whitney, b. 23 Mar 1764, Derby, CT;[22] was a trader at Westbury, now Watertown, Conn.; and died, unmarried, at the house of his uncle, Henry Whitney, in Derby, in June 1794. The codicil to his will was dated 23 June 1794.[23]

iv. Sarah5 Whitney, b. 11 Aug 1765, twin, Derby, CT;[24] d. about 1849, aged 84 years, Derby (now Seymour), CT, having been in a deranged condition or mind for several years, and sadly neglected by her relatives. Their indifference to her wants was so great that it was reported to the town-meeting as "disgraceful and unendurable."[25] v. Stephen Whitney, b. 11 Aug 1765, twin, Derby, CT;[26] died young.[27] vi. Lucinda Whitney, b. 2 Apr 1768, Derby, CT;[28] bapt. 22 May 1768, Derby, CT;[29] d. Sep 1769, Derby, CT.[30] vii. Abigail Whitney, b. 17 Jun 1769, Derby, CT;[31] bapt. 31 Jul 1769, Derby, CT;[32] d. 13 Sep 1769, Derby, CT.[33] viii. Eunice Whitney, bapt. 30 May 1771, Derby, CT;[34] was of feeble intellect, owing to injuries consequent upon a fall from a ladder, when about six years old; died in Derby, in the Summer of 1808, aged about 37 years.[35] ix. Lucinda Whitney, b. 24 Mar 1772 (twin), Derby, CT;[36] m. Amos Broad. x. Samuel Whitney, b. 24 Mar 1772 (twin), Derby, CT;[37] d. 9 Apr 1772, Derby, CT.[38] In the town-record he is called Stephen; but as tradition asserts positively that his name was Samuel, we have so written it.[39] xi. Nabby Whitney, b. 4 Apr 1774, Derby, CT;[40] bapt. 12 Jun 1774, Derby, CT;[41] d. 1 Oct 1862, Oxford, CT, aged 87 years 6 months; m. 30 Nov 1812, Derby, CT, Capt. Amos Sherman, as his second wife. He was a master-mariner, sailing from New Haven, Conn., who died at Derby, in the Spring of 1834, and was buried on Great Hill. She then went to live at Oxford, Conn., and died there, 1 Oct 1862, "aged 87 years and six months," and was buried in the Episcopal Cemetery.[42]
Stephen4 and Hannah (Hull)(Morse) Whitney had no children.

- 1810, Derby, New Haven Co., CT: S. Whitney, 1 male over 45 and 1 female over 45. This was probably the son Samuel, since the female, likely his wife, was over 45.
