(Remington Hobby, [prob.] Stephen⁶, Phineas⁵, Isaac⁴, Nathaniel³, Benjamin², John¹), son of Remington Hobby and Eliza (Weaver) Whitney, was born Nov 1842, Burr Oak, MI, and died 12 Oct 1924, Ceres, Stanislaus Co., CA.

He married firstly Rachel A. Pepper. She was born about 1845, and died after 1882.

He married secondly, 1885, Sarah (Bryan) Gilbert, daughter of John and Mary Melissa (Blake) Bryan. She was born Oct 1854, CA. She had married firstly, 6 Feb 1875, El Dorado, CA, Robert Gilbert, son of Luke Gilbert. He was born about 1839, MI, and died 22 Sep 1882, Stanislaus Co., CA. Sarah Bryan and her first husband, Robert Gilbert are both buried in the Ceres Memorial Park in Ceres, CA.

Obituary of Ernest Whitney, Fresno Bee, Thursday, March 13, 1952:

Modesto, March 13. Ernest Whitney, the father of Sam Whitney of Fresno, died today in his home in the Waterford district at the age of 70.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Shannon Chapel in Modesto.

A native of Nebraska, he had lived in California 66 years and was a retired rancher. He was a member of Waterford Grange No. 553 and for 18 years was a director of the Waterford Irrigation District.

In addition to the Fresnan, he is survived by his widow, Mrs. Carrie B. Whitney, Waterford; a daughter, Gladys E. Whitney, Oakdale; a son, Everett L. Whitney, Yuba City; and a granddaughter.
