He married firstly, 15 Jan 1860, Mount Pleasant, IA, Ann Deline Miller, daughter of Rev. Arthur and Rebecca (Wherret) Miller. She was born 13 Dec 1837, Columbia, IN, and died 28 Jun 1864, Mount Pleasant, IA. She was buried in Mount Pleasant Old City Cemetery.[2]

He married secondly, 6 Dec 1867, Mount Pleasant, IA, Nancy Ann Lambert, daughter of Jacob and Sydney (Feral/Terrell) Lambert. She was born 3 Mar 1848, Fairview, IL, and died 28 Oct 1930, Mount Pleasant, IA. She was buried in Pleasant View Cemetery, Kewanee, IL.[3]

He was a carpenter and builder. They dwelt in Mount Pleasant till 4 Mar 1862; in Canaan, IA, till 10 Aug 1862; in Winfield, IA, till 1 Apr 1863; and then returned to Mount Pleasant. They were living in South Jefferson Street, Mount Pleasant, IA, in Aug 1874.

From Portrait and Biographical Album of Henry County, Iowa, Chicago, Acme Publishing Company, 1888, p. 357:

"WILLIAM HENRY WHITNEY, architect, carpenter and builder, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, was born in Ross County, Ohio, Feb. 7, 1840, and is the son of William and Mary A. [Ressel] Whitney ....
"When the family came to Iowa, William H. Whitney, of whom we write, was fourteen years of age. He soon afterward engaged to learn the carpenter's trade, which he mastered, and in 1860 married Miss Angelina (Note: should be Ann Deline) Miller, daughter of Arthur Miller. Two children were born of their union: Mary F., born Nov. 15, 1861, and William A., born June 21, 1863. The former is now living in Colorado, and the latter died July 15, 1872. Mrs. Whitney died shortly after the birth of her second child, and Dec. 6, 1867, Mr. Whitney wedded Miss Nancy A. Lamb (Note: should be Lambert), daughter of Jacob and Sidney [Terrell] Lamb. She was born March 10, 1848, in Fulton County, Ill. Four children were born of the latter marriage, all sons. Charles H. was born Sept. 25, 1868; John L., Jan. 12, 1870; George W., July 17, 1871; Edwin, March 2, 1873.
"Mr. Whitney has been engaged in his occupation of contracting and building for upward of twenty-five years, and in that time has erected many of the best public and private buildings in Henry County, among which may be mentioned the residences of P. Summers, Walter Gamage, James Harlan, Jacob Housman, Le Grand Chandler, Wesley Greenfield, Daugherty and Comick. The Catholic Church, at Mt. Pleasant, destroyed by the cyclone of July, 1882, was rebuilt by him (Note: demolished in 2011), and in the summer and fall of 1887 he erected a handsome church building for the Methodist Episcopal Society of New London (Note: 7 miles E of Mt. Pleasant). He is a first-class mechanic and a fine draughtsman.
"Politically Mr. Whitney is a Democrat, and socially a member of the K. of L. and the Good Templars. In the latter body Mrs. Whitney is also a member. Both are members of the Christian Church, at Mt. Pleasant, in which they take a lively interest, generally being found in their accustomed place during the hours of worship."

William & Nancy appear together in the 1910 Henry County, IL, census in Kewanee. Nancy appears as a widow in the 1925 Iowa state census in Mt. Pleasant with John & Anna. She seems to have been visiting her son in Mt. Pleasant when that census was taken. Nancy was again visiting her son in Mt. Pleasant in 1930 when she had a stroke and died there. She was buried in Kewanee, Illinois, next to her husband, William Whitney.

I believe the stone was placed later and incorrectly shows her birth as 1850. The newspaper in which the obituary appeared was a 1930 newspaper, not 1929 as the stone implies. The obituary states her age as 82, consistent with an 1848 birth.

"Mrs. Nancy Whitney Dies on Tuesday.
"Aged Woman, Former Resident Here Taken by Death Late Tuesday.
"Mrs. Nancy Ann Whitney, 82, passed away at the hospital Tuesday afternoon at 3:45 following an illness since Saturday at which time she suffered what appeared to be a stroke of apoplexy, for in the evening she lost consciousness and never rallied again.
"During her brief illness she was tenderly cared for by her only son, J. L. Whitney, living in this city although she had lived in Kewanee, Ill., for thirty-five years. Prior to that she resided here. On many occasions since moving away, however, she had been here to visit her son. Mr. and Mrs. Whitney were at that time of their residence here, staunch and faithful members of the Christian church and Mrs. Whitney had clung to that faith, being an earnest Christian worker in the church where she resided.
"In addition ot J. L. Whitney of this city, she is survived by three other sons: Ed and Henry of Los Angeles, California, and George, of Red Bluff, California.
"Private funeral services will be held at the J. L. Whitney home Thursday morning at 8 o'clock after which the remains will be taken to her former home in Kewanee and funeral services will be held there at the Christian church Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. Burial will be made in Kewanee beside Mr. Whitney, who passed away several years ago."
