William John8 Whitney (William7, Charles6, Samuel5, Abraham4, Joseph3, John2, Henry1), son of William7 and Mary (Mitchell) Whitney, was born Apr 1845, St. John, NB, and died 12 Sep 1919, Freeport, NY. He was buried in Union Cemetery, North Smithfield, RI.[1]

He married, 1870, Rosaline A. Jennings, daughter of Richard and Nancy (Horton) Jennings. She was born 16 Aug 1842, Riverhead, NY, and died 26 Nov 1917, Brooklyn, NY. She was buried in Union Cemetery, North Smithfield, RI.[2]

He was living in New York, NY, in 1874.

Obituary:

"Obituary - William J. Whitney Dies - William J. Whitney, 74 years old, of 1092 Prospect Place, a retired buyer and salesman for the Devoe & Reynolds Paint Co., died suddenly of apoplexy on Friday at Freeport, L.I. The funeral services will be held at his late home in Brooklyn on Monday evening at 8 o'clock and interment will be in the Union Cemetery at Woonsocket, R.I. Mr. Whitney came to Brooklyn about 45 years ago from Buffalo, where in his younger days he was an intimate friend of the late President Grover Cleveland, and he was active in Democratic politics in that city as well as Brooklyn. He had been connected with Devoe & Reynolds Co. for about 40 years, retiring from business five years ago. Mr. Whitney was well known at Hempstead and Long Beach, where he owned several cottages. He was formerly president of the old Rod and Gun Club of Long Beach for five years. He was known as a very kindly man, a philanthropist connected with several charitable organizations and nearly every child in the neighborhood of his home knew him as an ardent friend and grown-up playmate."[3]
