I have the following information on a Rufus Whitney who showed up in
Rockingham and have not before identified how he fits in.  Perhaps he
belongs to your family.

Rufus Whitney was warned out of Rockingham on 19 Jul 1809 in Rockingham,
Windham Co, VT (Thomas Bellows Peck, Vital Records of Rockingham, Vermont,
from
the beginning of the Records to January 1, 1845 and Records of the First
Church
of Rockingham, Vermont, from its organization, October 27, 1773 to September
25, 1839 (Second; Pittsford, VT:  Genealogical Society of Vermont, 1994), p.
117.).  People were usually warned out of town within three months of
arriving.

He was involved in a land transaction on 8 Aug 1809 in Rockingham, Windham Co,
VT: Ezra Whitney Jr of Rockingham in the County of Windham and State of
Vermont, Yeoman, in consideration of thirty three dollars ... paid by William
Minard Junr of Rockingham ... yeoman ... a certain piece or parcel of land ...
situate &amp; lying in Rockingham aforesaid containing four acres off of the
southeast corner of the lot which I the said Whitney now lives on ... the
above
obligation is such that if the said Whitney lawfully and truly paid or causes
to be paid the sum of thirty three dollars with interest to the said William
Minard ... in good current bills in one year from the date then the above
obligation is void and of no effect, otherwise it is to remain in full force &amp;
virtue ... eighth day of August [1809].  Signed by Ezra Whitney Junr,
witnessed
by Rufus Whitney, Horris Whitney, and Erastus Whitney (Rockingham, Vermont
records, FHL microfilm 0028759, p. 264).

A Rufus Whitney appeared on the census of 1820 in Athens, Windham Co, VT, (the
family consisted of one male 26-45, 1 male 0-10, and 1 female 26-45) (1820
U.S.
Census, Athens, p. 108 (stamped)).

As the above Rufus was a witness for Ezra Whitney, and Ezra had moved to
New York in 1818, I checked for any Rufus Whitney's in this area of New York
in 1820 and found the following. I have no idea if it is the same Rufus as
above or not though.

A Rufus Whitney appeared on the census of 1820 in Orcean (Ossian) Township,
Allegany Co (now Livingston Co), NY, (the family consisted of 1 male 45 and
older, 1 male 26-45, 2 males 16-26, 2 males 0-10, and 1 female 16-26.  Three
people were engaged in agriculture) (1820 U.S.  Census, Orcean [Ossian],
Allegany Co [now Livingston Co], NY, p. 90 (47 stamped), National Archives,
M33-64.).
