In the current war in Iraq has caused the state of Vermont to loose more soldiers per capita than any other state and we feel this loss every day in our small rural communities. I serve in the Vermont House of Representatives and we struggle with how to best help the soldiers' survivors. Their losses are heartbreaking. Carolyn What you wrote brought tears to my eyes. My son is a full time recruiter for the Vermont National Guard. He has been full time active duty National Guard since 4 days after 9/11. He has been in the military in one capacity or another for 12 years. I have seen his pain when he has had to attend the funerals of 2 of his close friends who died in Iraq and Afghanistan, and others that he has attended simply as a show of respect. The state of Vermont, and the country, lost an incredible human being with the death of Tom Stone in Afghanistan last spring. As the governor of VT said, he was a true hero in his life and as he died. Although old enough to be my son's father, Tom was his best friend and a true inspiration to all of us. But I see it taking a toll on my son and his friends. It is truly heartbreaking and of great concern to all. It is destroying marriages and making the lives of those who have served, whether in the Mid-East or here at home, extremely difficult. But for the small state of Vermont, it is truly devastating. Thank you for being part of the VT House and recognizing these conditions. It truly needs addressing, but I know the resources and abilities are limited. But there is always hope. Thanks Jo Hogle
