Vol. 7, No. 3 We have had additional requests for information on the Whitney family of Binghamton, and Whitney Flats, New York. Our good friend, Ben Whitney, of Simi Valley, California, has sent us gleanings from his research into this family. Many members of this family migrated to Ohio. We visited Binghamton in April and May of this year. It is but 50 miles from our family homestead in Bradford Co., Pa. There was so little data anywhere on the Binghamton family that we decided to investigate. The main library in the town is in an old brick building. But the architecture is of those great classical lines, popular in the early 20th Century, and the late 19th Century. With age, these buildings acquire a certain patina that makes them more attractive. They have a feeling of agelessness. The Binghamton library has an adequate genealogical collection. It houses the complete set of reference books from the N.E.H.&G.S. That set is "hard to come by." However, information on the Whitney family, who founded that city, was scarce! So, we are grateful for the information supplied to us by Benjamin Whitney. The material is taken from "The Whitney Genealogy of the Brothers, Judge Joshua and General William Whitney of Binghamton, New York." by Hallam S. Whitney. Cleveland, Ohio. The early history of the family in England is given. We pick it up with Joshua (Thomas, John). Joshua, born Watertown, had 3 wives; Lydia, Mary and Abigail (Tarbell, Tarball), whom he married 30 Sept., 1678. Joshua was known as "Deacon." He died Groton, Mass., 7 August, 1719. He served in King Phillip s War, as did many others of the early settlers. Children were: Hannah, born ? Joshua, born 14 June, 1666. Sarah, born 10 Oct., 1668. Abigail, born 1673. Mary, born 1 July, 1675. William, born 28 Feb., 1678. Cornelius, born ? David, born 1682. Martha, born 7 Elizabeth, born 17 April 1707 Elinor, born ? William Whitney (Joshua, Thomas, John) He married Lydia Perham March, 1700; Margaret Mirick, 25 April, 1717. His children were: William, born Killingly, Co., 5 May 1701 Lydia, born 26 Dec., 1710. Joshua, born 1 Nov., 1714. John, born 13 Jan., 1717/8 Elizabeth, born 12 August, 1719. Caleb, born 10 Sept., 1721. William Whitney (William, Joshua, Thomas, John) William Whitney married Mary Whittemore, 16 July, 1733, Killingly, Ct. He settled there, and then moved to Canaan, Ct., about 1753. Their children: William, born 5 Dec., 1735. Thomas, born 28 Feb., 1737. Abigail, born 4 July, 1741. Thomas Whitney (William, William, Joshua, Thomas, John) Thomas Whitney, born 5 Feb., 1735, Killingly, Ct., married Elizabeth Boardman, Sheffield, Mass. For many years Thomas lived with his father, William. However, on 18 June, 1761 he was living at Claverack, Albany Co., N.Y. Here he was known as "Lt. Tom Whitney of Claverack." He deeded property to his father in Canaan, Ct., about this time. He removed to Nobletown, near North Hillsdale, Columbia Co., N.Y. Here, he bought land claims of Massachusetts that were in N.Y. He settled on the Manor Estate of Robert Livingston (Rev, soldier). He took an active part in the attempt to make good these claims. The State of New York frowned on the supposed claims to their land. A sheriff s posse was sent to arrest him, Robert Noble, and the others. A fight broke out near the home of Robert Noble. Shots rang out from both sides. Cornelius Ten Broeck and Thomas Whitney were killed. Thomas Whitney was buried near North Hillsdale, in a cemetary plot provided by the Patroon, Van Rensselaer. Elizabeth Whitney went to live with her eldest son, and died on his farm at Binghamton, N.Y. Children were: Joshua, born 27 Nov.,l748. John, born 5 May, 1751. William, born ? Thomas, born ? died Norwalk, Ct., 1800. HERE WE DIGRESS TO PICK UP THE HISTORY OF WILLIAM, BROTHER OF THE ABOVE THOMAS. William Whitney, brother of Thomas (above), was born 5 Dec., 1735. Among his children was: Christopher, born 28 Sept., 1751 (this may be wrong); married Mary Ticknor 1 Dec., 1774, Sharon, Ct. He served in the Revolution. He took his military land grant in Solon, Courtland Ct., N.Y. He removed there from Tinmouth, Vt., about 1790. He had children: Ruluff, born 25 June, 1777 Billy, born 12 May, 1775 Olive, born 11 March, 1780; married Col. Moses Hopkins, died 1872, Ccurtland Ct, NY. Christopher, born 12 Nov., 1782, married Rhoda Weller. NOW BACK TO THOMAS WHITNEY S DESCENDANTS FROM ABOVE Joshua Whitney, born 27 Nov., 1748 (Thomas, William, William, Joshua, Thomas, John), served in the Claverack Battalion as a Captain. His brother William served as a private. These brothers removed to Broome Co., N.Y., in the Spring of 1787. They settled in what became the city of Binghamton. They were in the 2nd part of settlers, and the first to come in wagons. John Whitney, their brother-in-law, came with them. He settled at Whitney Flats, near Chenango Forks, near his brother William, until 1812. Then John Whitney removed to Rochester, N.Y. The history of Rochester, N.Y. reveals the story of that branch of the Whitney family after that time. William Whitney, brother of Joshua (Thomas, William, William, Joshua, Thomas, John), as stated, was a Private in the Revolution, in Albany, N.Y., State Militia. He was appointed Ensign, Columbia Co., in 1786; Lt., the same year; Captain of the Light Infantry of Tioga Co., 1792; Major, in 1793; Lt. Colonel, in 1802; Brigadier General in 1804; resigned 1808. He died 18 Jan., 1810. He, with his brother Joshua, came to Binghamton from Hillsdale, N.Y. General William is thought to have married Mary Rose of Rosenberry, and had children: John R. Rhoda Sarah Three other daughters John R. Whitney (William, Thomas, William, William, Joshua, Thomas, John), son of the above William Whitney (his only son), was born in 1786, Hillsdale, N.Y. He was a soldier in the War of 1812. He married Catherine Schoonover. Upon her death, he married Sallie Spencer. His children by his 1st marriage were: William W., born 9 March, 1807. John R., Jr., born 12 Oct., 1808. Hiram, born 24 May, 1812. Rachel, born 1813. Calvin, born 30 May, 1815. Joshua, born 5 Sept., 1819. Henry S., born 8 Feb., 1821, Newton, N.J. Caroline, born 2 Feb., 1823 (Note: Another daughter, Hannah has been credited to this family. However, the date of her birth is only 16 or 17 years later than that of John R., Which makes it improbable that she was of this family) Children by Sallie Spencer: Calista Elydia Climena Rosa (died young) Ambrosia Rhoda (died young) Rosena, died 1867, aged 19. Lucretia, born Jan., 1834. Elisha Spencer, born 24 May, 1836, Camden, N.J. Warren Spencer, born 15 August, 1839, York, Medina Co., Oh. Warner Spencer, born 15 August, 1839, York, Medina Cc.., Oh. Frank Rodman, barn Rochester, Lorain Co., Oh. 16 July 1843 John R. Whitney moved to Camden Twp., Lorain Co., Oh, 1836, but lived in Rochester 1842. In 1850 he received a deed of 25 acres of land in Camden, which he deeded to his son Elisha in 1854. John R. Whitney died 10 Nov., 1857, aged 71, according to his tombstone. William W. Whitney (John R., William, Thomas, William, William, Joshua, Thomas, John), born 9 March, 1807, married Ann, daughter of Thomas Sigsworth of Camden, Oh., a native of England. William went to Camden in 1834, where he purchased a farm that is now a part of the village of Kipton. When the New York Central Railroad was built through Camden, in 1852, William Whitney laid out a village west of the main highway, and named it Binghamton. The name never appeared on the maps, and so it is still called Kipton. Ann Whitney died 3 April, 1870. John R. died 15 Nov., 1878. (Adeline, Adaline) Whitney came to Red River Co., Tx., between October 2, 1837 and January 1, 1840 when the Third Class Headright land grant was in effect. Hobson Whitley applied for this grant of 660 acres. We wonder if the Whitley should have been Whitney, because in 1866, Jason W. Whitney applied for his 660 acres grant as having entered Tx. before Jan., 1, 1840. Also, one of Jason s sons was named Hobson. In 1850 Lamar Co., Tx., census, Adalaide H. Whitney is head of the household with children born in Alabama: Jason N. Whitney, born 1829; married Sarah Morton in 1853. Elizabeth, born 1835; married Hardee Holloway. Samuel Edmond, born about 1836, married Sarah Holloway. Mary E. was born in 1838. In the 1880 Red River Co. census for Samuel E. Whitney, he stated his father was born in Pennsylvania, and his Mother in Va. We have found in the Baldwin Co., Al., 1830 census, a Jason Whitney with a male that is of an age to be Adalaide s husband, with a male that would be the age of our Jason W. Whitney. So far we have not been able to find anything about this family, and have not been able to find a marriage record for our Whitney and Adalaide. There should be a marriage record in Al. for this couple. The Whitney family probably came to the Republic of Tx. because of the land grants. Between March 2, 1836, and October 1, 1837, grants were available for 1,280 acres. However, between October 2, 1837 and Jan. 1, 1840, a grant of 640 acres was available. Hobson Whitley applied for a grant of 640 acres. There is a possibility that the name on the application should have been Hobson Whitney, for the reasons we have given here. One of Jason Whitney s grandsons was named Hobson. No record has been found to identify Jason s father. In the 1850 Lamar Co. Census, the head of the household is Adalaide H. Whitney, with children born in Al. The children we have given. In the 1860 census, Adalaide (Adaline) and her family were in Red River Co. In the 1850 s William and Mary Jane Morton moved to Red River Co. from Tn. Their children were: Mary Ellen; Sarah; Martha, who married John Atkins; Malissa who married Michael Depue; Emily; Eliza who married James Spiva; Caladonia; and James. The oldest child, Mary Ellen, first married John Sutton in 1851, and moved to Ar. In 1865, as a widow with 2 children, married Dr. William Watt Reese. The 2nd daughter married Jason Whitney in 1853. Jason and Sarah Whitney s children were: William, who never married; Sophia, married George Rucker; Mary, married Henry Freer; John Robert, married Susan Mittie Keyes; Charles Napoleon, married Mary Elizabeth Reese. Jason and Samuel Whitney joined the Confederate States Army at Pine Creek, June 29, 1861. Both brothers were in the 34th Texas Cavalry, and fought in the Indian Territory, Arkansas, Mis souri, and Louisiana. While in Louisiana, Samuel was wounded, captured, and sent to Elmira, N.Y. Jason was wounded by a rifle shot and hospitalized at Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1865, he was released from duty at Jefferson, Tx. In 1867 he had taken a load of cotton to Jefferson, and on the journey home, fell ill and spent the night by the side of the road. He later died from that illness. The family historian, Lois MCoin, 635 Fairway, Paris, Texas, learned from an uncle that Jason Whitney was buried in the McCrury Cemetary, in southeastern Lamar Co. A descendant of Jason s son, John Robert, knew the location of the grave. In 1983 a group of descendants placed a military marker to replace the vois d arc post that had marked his grave for 115 years. Jason s widow married John Thompson and they are buried at the old Mt. Pleasant Cemetary, Deport, Texas. It was after his mother died that Charles Napoleon Whitney, the youngest son of Jason and Sarah, traveled to Arkansas to visit his Mother s sister, Mary Ellen Morton Sutton Reese. It was while there he and her daughter, Mary Elizabeth, were married, in 1889. ~his closely related family of Whitney and Morton lived at Center Point, Arkansas for 20 years. It was there their children; Ellen, Mittie, Houston, Henry, Reese, Albert, and Robert were born. In 1908 Charley Whitney, with his three oldest children; Ellen, Mittie, and Houston, left Arkansas to return to Lamar Co., where he had lived his first 18 or 19 years. He packed a wagon with household belongings; a few chickens; tied the cow to the wagon, and the four of them started out for Texas. They would walk during the day, rotating turns as driver. As they followed the established route to Texas, would camp by the trail at night. With the camp fire burning, people from the area would come to hear the news of Arkansas, and hear the singing of the 2 girls. His wife, Mary Elizabeth, with her mother and small children, journeyed by train to Deport. In Texas, 2 more children, Knox and Gladys were born. Little is known of the Morton family, other than the marriage records of some of the sisters of Mary Ellen and Sarah." His wife, the former Mary Amanda Whitlock of Ct., while waiting for him in New York State, gave birth, posthumously to their son, John Linus Whitney; born 14 Dec., 1850. Need information on this family. Somewhere between 1850 and 1859, Mary Amanda Whitlock Whitney married Daniel Shattuck (from New Hampshire). These two moved to Darke Co., Ohio with Mary Amanda's father, John Whitlock and his wife. With them were a James Whitlock and wife Sarah. This James was about 15 years younger than Mary Amanda, so this may have been her brother (unless her father had married twice). John Linus Whitney, Jr., married Margaret Replogle, daughter of Jacob and Abigail Replogle of Darke Co., Ohio. They had a son, John Clifton Whitney, who married Katherine Middleton; they in turn had Eugene Middleton Whitney (my father). My father states that Grandmother Katherine told him that when she had a name researched, she learned that a Mrs. Shields of Elkhart, In., was related to our family. In the 1940 telephone directory from that area, I found a Mrs. E. A. Shields living there, on 407 So. Second St. Does anyone have any knowledge of this family? We also believe that our family is registered with the Colonial Dames, by Mary Elizabeth Whitney, in 1935/9. Mrs. Mary (Whitney) Grumbling, P.O. Box 221, Forbestown, Ca., 95941. Prom Editor: There are 2 Colonial Dames organizations. There is one named Colonial Dames of America. The other is The Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century. A family does not get registered. It is an individual thing, as it is with the D.A.R. There are lineage books available at some libraries that will give certain lines of given families. Several Whitney families are registered; my own being one. Researching Josiah Whitney? Born? He died 10 Dec., 1824. He married Esther Weeks. He was a Minuteman, and was from New York State. Mrs. Melvin L. Lesher, R.R. IBX7, Clarion, Iowa, 50525. Need any information on the parents of Haynes and Calvin Whitney, who came to Thomaston, Me., early in 1800 s. Haynes married Jane Robinson, and Calvin married Eliza Everton. Am looking for any information on the following Whitney entries in the LDS International Genealogical Index of the Mormon Archives: "Calvin Whitney, son of Daniel and Eunice ?.born 23 August, 1790, Cheshire, Chesterfield Twp., N.H. Danie~ 1. Whitney, son of James and Mary ? born 26 Feb, 1772, Cheshire, Winchester Twp., N.H. Daniel T. Whitney, son of Sylvanus and Hannan ? Born 12 April, 1761, Hillsboro, Dunstable Twp., W.V. Calvin Whitney, son of Orlando and Aeneth ? born 4 Sept., 1795, Windsor, Ludlow Twp., Vt. Mrs. Marion Whitney Leska, 712 So. Prairie Av., Barrington, I1.,600l0 In 1808 James Chaffin and Betsy Chaffin were married. They were cousins. Their fathers were brothers. Betsy s line has been established by Peirce, that her mother was Mary Whitney, and this is the line: John, Richard, Richard, Richard, Daniel, Mary. Betsy died, Jan., 1845 in Alexandria Bay, N.Y. In March of that year, James married a Deborah Whitney. Family papers suggest that Deborah was Deborah Mansfie]d, and that she may have been married first to a Mr. Lovell. Thus her name at the time of her marriage to Mr. Whitney was Deborah Mansfield Lovell. And there may have been a relationship between Betsy and Deborah Whitney s line. When Deborah Mansfield Lovell married James Chaffin, the children already in the family were: Maria, born 1832; Elias, born 1837; Samuel, born 1841; Sarah, born 1843. If these were the children already in the family, they could have been the children of Betsy Chaffin Whitney, and nobody else. In the census records, Mariah, Elias and Samuel list their birthplace as New Hampshire. Sarah lists hers as New York. Debcrah Mansfield Lovell Whitney lists hers as Maine. In the census records of 1880, Elias Whitney lists his parents as having been born in Maine! Before this it was New Hampshire. In 1900 Elias Whitney lists his mother as having been born in New Hampshire; but his father has no birth record listed. The daughter of James and Betsy (Whitney) Chaffin, Mariah, married the son of James, James Remington Chaffin, Jr. They were married in Lockport, Niagara Co., New York. In 1850 they were in Wisconsin. In 1860 they were still in Wisconsin. In this census, Elias, Samuel and Sarah are missing. In the early 1870 s, Elias is married in Wisconsin; and in those records he states his father s name is Samuel, and his mother is Deborah! In 1865, James died, in Iowa. Mariah died there in 1878. In writing her memoirs, one of Mariah s daughters said that after her mother died, her Aunt Sarah (sister of Mariah) re-married, and took her grandmother, Deborah Mansfield Lovell Whitney, and the youngest sister, to live with them, and they went to Kansas. She stated that they went to Cawker City, where their Uncle Sam Whitney lived. Here they stayed, while their father went west to Philipsburg to homestead. In the 1880 census, Uncle Sam Whitney is not living in Cawker City, but in Glen Elder, six miles from Cawker. In Cawker City there is a Whitney running a hotel. This Whitney is listed in Pierce's book. We assume there is a connection between this W.C. Whitney and Deborah s family. Maybe this is the reason Deborah went there? Can anyone help us with these lines? Arthur S. Hart, 916 Red Oak Lane, Fort Worth, Texas, 76114. PERHAPS THIS IS THE TIME TO EXPLAIN TO YOU SOMETHING ABOUT THE CENSUS RECORDS. Census records are not necessarily correct. It should be noted that answers were given by the person answering the door. Many people had never told their children anything about their birth place, etc. So many times it was a guess. The early census records were thought to he a ruse in order to tax people. In New Jersey, they refused to take a census, mostly for this reason! In many cases, the census recorder.took the word of a child, or an old aunt or uncle. They guessed at ages, places of birth, ancestry. There was no rule that the head of the house must answer the questions. That would have saved a lot of confusion. Today, there are strict rules, and penalties attached to the person not giving a true response. We are fortunate that the records were in any way correct at all!
