I am thoroughly confused.!  Can someone help me?

According to Bond's History of Watertown, Page 645, Line 75, Mary
WHITNEY, dob 21 Apr 1694, married John FISKE, Jr. on 7 Jun 1711.  This
shows her as the daughter of Joseph WHITNEY and Martha BEACH.

According to "The BEMIS History and Genealogy, being an Account in
Greater Part of the Descendants of Joseph BEMIS of Watertown, Mass",
Page 3, by Colonel Thomas Waln-Morgan Draper, Mary WHITNEY, DOB 30 Sep
1689, married John FISKE, Jr. on 7 Jun 1711.  This shows her as the
daughter of Samuel WHITNEY and Mary BEMIS.

Which Mary is correct?  Draper's book was published about 50 years later
than Bond's.  Is his information more accurate?  Does anyone
know?  Can you cite another source for me?

I sure would appreciate some help.

I am new to this group, and in fact to the study of my family's genealogy.
I have recently been compiling family tree information that a number of my
relatives who have the genealogy bug have collected over the years.  One
of the branches in my tree can be traced back to John and Elinor (-?-)
Whitney of Watertown, MA., through their son John (bap. 14 Sep 1621,
Isleworth, England).

While searching the internet recently, I was very surprised and interested
to find a web site that traced the ancestery of John Whitney back through
the European Royal families.  After eagerly downloading a lot of
information, I stumbled across another web site that referenced two
papers in The American Genealogist (Donald Lines Jacobus, M.A.,
"Pre-American Ancestries: John Whitney of Watertown, Mass.," vol. 10
(1933-1934), pp. 84-88; and Reed, Paul C., "Whitney Origins Revisited:
John-1 Whitney of Watertown, Massachusetts, and Henry-1 Whitney of Long
Island and Norwalk, Connecticut," vol. 69, No. 1 (Jan 1994), pp. 9-14.).
These papers cast a lot of doubt on this supposed royal linkage.  However,
the papers also hint that many people are defending this linkage.  My
personal take after reading the papers is that they have some good
arguments, but that they are by no means conclusive.

I would like to know what the prevailing opinion about this controversy
is?  Do most people accept the conclusions of Jacobus and Reed?  I suspect
that this debate may have gone on in this group gefore, and if so I
apologize in advance, and maybe someone can point me to a FAQ, or some
archives that would discuss this topic.

Thanks for any light that you can shed on this topic for me!

think what it comes down to is information based on documented facts...the
'royal' lineage falls short of this in some of our minds.

My opinion is that the ancestry is at best unproved and unlikely, and almost
surely incorrect.  There is a smidgeon of possibility that it is correct, but
there is insufficient documentation to accept the link between Thomas WHITNEY
of Westminster and his alleged father Robert, son of Sir Robert.  In my mind
the most telling argument against that acceptance is this.  John-1 WHITNEY's
nephew John, son of John-1's brother Robert, claimed to be heir male of the
WHITNEY of Whitney family of Herefordshire, and submitted a pedigree (which
is the *only* document supporting the alleged connection).  His claim was
*rejected* by authorities at the time, who were in a much better position to
know the facts than we are today.  Furthermore, the nephew could not have
been heir male, since John-1 was older than Robert, and so he and his
descendants would have had precedence over Robert and his.  It sounds like
John, son of Robert, was trying to pull a fast one!

Anyone who claims that John-1 WHITNEY was a great-grandson of Sir Robert
WHITNEY must supply proof.  That proof is currently lacking.  Any claimed
genealogical link without proof cannot be accepted as correct by any serious
genealogist.

Just my opinion. <grin>

WHITNEY of Westminster, father of John-1.  Most of the records are

there or hire someone to go there for you and do look-ups.  Furthermore,
the WHITNEY family is spread over much of England, even in the 1500's, and
so it is very difficult to pinpoint which record repositories will have the
information we seek, and then which records in the repository are the ones
to look at.  Probably we will not discover proof of the parentage of Thomas
without a comprehensive reconstruction of most or all of the WHITNEY
families in all of England.  As you might guess, this would be a big,
expensive, time-consuming project, and probably no one in the WRG is really
in a position to carry it out.  With such old records, there are additional
problems:  finding people in unindexed records; deciphering old handwriting;
reading the medieval Latin in which some of the records written; dealing with
the destruction of many of the records due to fire, flood, pests, and the
English Civil War; resolving directly conflicting statements in primary
source records; and evaluating the trustworthiness of the surviving
documents.  The most accessible records have already been examined, as
revealed by the works of Pierce, Phoenix, Jacobus, and Reed, where they cite
the sources for their statements.  Hopefully we will get lucky one day, and
stumble on just the right record!

I hope this helps you understand why I rely on experts, their research and

I guess as far as a "most wanted" list, I don't have information about most of
the wifes that married the whitney's in the above list.  I don't have any
information about Mercy Robinson lineage, and I only have parents names for Ruth
Reynolds, Sarah Hagar, and Elizabeth Hastings.  I have two generations of
information on Lois Houghton.  If anyone has more information than this I would
be glad to have it.

I think alomost everyone agreed that the royal link is quite improbably,
but a few people did hold out a little bit of hope.  No one produced any
"new findings," most just quoted the Jacobus and Reed papers as their
sources.  I will post anything of interest that does show up...

According to Bond's History of Watertown, Page 645, Line 75, Mary
WHITNEY, dob 21 Apr 1694, married John FISKE, Jr. on 7 Jun 1711.  This
shows her as the daughter of Joseph WHITNEY and Martha BEACH.

According to "The BEMIS History and Genealogy, being an Account in
Greater Part of the Descendants of Joseph BEMIS of Watertown, Mass",
Page 3, by Colonel Thomas Waln-Morgan Draper, Mary WHITNEY, DOB 30 Sep
1689, married John FISKE, Jr. on 7 Jun 1711.  This shows her as the daughter of Samuel
WHITNEY and Mary BEMIS.

Which Mary is correct?  Draper's book was published about 50 years later
than Bond's.  Is his information more accurate?  Does anyone know?  Can
you cite another source for me?

Hello All;

I've been adding the Whitney Lines to Witney12 database and in most cases the
information is barebones, no dates for instance. If anyone would care to
expand on the info I would include that also.

A word about the content of the Whitney database. I approached the building
of the database as that of a compiler of members data, as Robert Ward has
stated I accept the information and include it without question. I have on a
number of occasions offered to discuss differences that arise and will change
data if the original contributor agrees with the new data. If there is a
particular area of disagreement, please contact me and I'll set up a dialog
with the originator of the data and perhaps a we can come to a conclusion.

As to the establishment of a database for the VR's, the data that we have
would have to be reformated so that fields can be created. That would require
that each proposed field would have to be seperated by commas and the
structure of the date have the commas removed. We then would have to add the
town to each record so that when a sort is done the reference to the town is
shown with the result of the sort. Other problems exist, but the main problem
is that the user would have to have a database program, such as Paradox or
Microsoft Access to use the database. I could build such a database and
provide the results of a sort, but I don't know how to make the database
available to the group. I know that some of our members are computer
programers and maybe they can help with this problem.

Just a quick note at this time.  You might want to consider holding back some
of the detailed data on living persons, as they might become the subject of
some kind of fraud if their Birthdates, parents names, etc., are to become
available to any person exploring the Net.  A number of people have limited
their information for this reason, as credit card companies may use mother's
maiden name or grandmother's birthdate as a telephone identifier.

Glad to have your line, and I won't pass on the late material.  Please post
it to the Whitney maillist if you are willing, as a number of our members try
to keep the linkages to other current members in their own full Whitney
database.

To WRG members:

I just bought FoxPro 2.6 for Windows to use for establishing my Whitney
"facts" database, and will probably install it Sunday and start learning how
to use it.  I hope to be able to take advantage of Peg's start on Indexing
the VR's and build her work right in with what I am trying to think through
and design.  The database developer/manager  has been here since last Monday,
but this is the craziest week of the year for me - my college's Jazz Band,
which I direct, is doing it's big annual show last night and tonight, and we
have been rehearsing every night this week.  Once that is past, I'll have
more time again to devote to my real love - genealogy.

I am not sure that omitting information is a good solution.  Some of us
are trying to link up with living relatives.  And it would be confusing
for a message poster to leave out of his line his own mother's maiden name
AND the family names of all her father's male line, or to leave out
ourselves from our own lines (and most of us who post things to this list
are still living, of course 8^), even if our mothers aren't), it seems
unworkable to leave out enough information so that folks couldn't
determine mothers' maiden names for most of us (Krehl, for me, used to be
unbreakable secret code, eh?).

Since the mother's maiden name is already virtually necessarily
compromised, folks including genealogy buffs should '''always''' give as
the mother's maiden name some OTHER password, such as the maternal
grandmother's maiden name, or a first cousin's mother's maiden name, some
other favorite ancestor's maiden name (something you will remember).

Those who have been in computers since the bbs (bulletin board systems)
days know that you should always give different passwords on different
systems anyway, so unscrupulus system operators who know your password
can't pose as you on different systems.  Suggestion: Keep a file on your
own computer with all your passwords, encrypt it if you want, but let's
not compromise our genealogy work by omitting relevant information.  In
this day of big brother watching us and computer databases everywhere
anyhow, I doubt that leaving certain items out of genealogy mailing lists
and online databases is going to help a whole lot anyhow.


Gee that got wordy, but let me reveal that my own 27 year old daughter was
shocked to find out how much information was available online about her
(because a distant cousin through my paternal grandmother's sister's line
was into this stuff before I got hooked).

It's a new world and I think we just have to live with it realistically.

1792(somewhere in ME probably) m.PATIENCE (nothing known of name or birth)
ch. CAROLINE b.2 June 1825 in the Town of Cumberland, County of Cumberland,
ME. Benj. died 25 Oct. 1837 ae 45, and Patience died 11 May,1867.  Both
buried in Methodist Church Yard, West Cumberland, ME.  I think Caroline
married one of my Grannell gguncles and we've been seeking her for ages.
Marsha up there in Maine, do you have the names of the 9 children of
Ebenezer and Mehitable of Brunswick in your line?  Evelyn Brown, do you
know the VR's on Benjamin son of Benjamin and Mercy of Lisbon ME in your
line?
        The good NEWS is I picked up some Maine Whitney VR's today. Can't
type and send right away, but I will give you the lines and will answer
queries from you all. No Jabez or Calvin[maybe my Benjamin is a brother to
Jabez!]..  I have all the VR's for Augusta plus  WILLIAM (Abner, John,
Isaiah, Thomas,John), of Standish Maine and his children and some grands;
NATHANIEL s/o Abel and Thankful of Gorham ,his parents,siblings and
children. I'd be ever so grateful to clarify Caroline's parentage before I
leave this week for sunny CA to find her grave, along with some Whitney and

Draper wins!

The will of Samuel WHITNEY of Watertown, dated 12 Feb 1731, mentions son-in-law
John FISKE, whom he made executor, and four grandchildren John FISKE, Mary
FISKE, Abigail FISKE, and Sarah FISKE (Middlesex Co. Probate Files, #24742).
Mary had allegedly died 27 Feb 1726/7 (according to Bond, p. 211, line 2), so
was not mentioned.  This proves that Mary, daughter of Samuel and Mary (BEMIS)
WHITNEY, b. 30 Sep 1689, Watertown, married John FISKE, 7 Jun 1711, Watertown.

Then who did Mary, daughter of Joseph and Martha (BEACH) WHITNEY, b. 21 Apr
1694, Watertown, marry?  Why, she married John KNAPP, 13 Jul 1715, Watertown.
This is the marriage assigned by Bond to Mary, daughter of Samuel.  Since
Joseph WHITNEY left no will, we cannot prove this in that way, and must rely
on the process of elimination to identify the wife of John KNAPP.

Bond has the two first cousins switched.  This way the brides were both aged
21, instead of Bond's way, where one was aged 17 and the other 25.

Dear WRG,

Different authors have made various statements alleging that various persons
named Benjamin WHITNEY died in 1736 in Watertown.  The purpose of this message
is to explain which one really did.

There is no death record in the Watertown vital records for a Benjamin WHITNEY
in 1736.  There are, however, probate records for such a person.  In Middlesex
County Probate Files, #24606, appears the will of Benjamin WHITNEY of Watertown
dated 14 Jun 1736, and proved 19 Oct 1736.  In it he mentions wife Elizabeth,
son Benjamin WHITNEY, son Samuel WHITNEY, daughter Elizabeth WHITNEY (single
woman), and son Joseph WHITNEY (made executor).  Witnesses were John WHITNEY,
John TAYNTER, and John COOLEIDG.  Executor's bond was posted on 8 Nov 1736 by
Joseph WHITNEY, with John WHITNEY and John TAYNTER, sureties, all of Watertown.

The testator can easily be identified with the Benjamin WHITNEY who married
on 1 Mar 1709/10, Watertown, Elizabeth FISKE, dau. of John and Abigail (PARKS)
FISKE, b. 20 Jan 1686, Watertown.  They had four children born in Watertown,
according to the vital records:  Joseph, b. 3 Dec 1710; Benjamin, b. 14 Sep
1712; Samuel, b. 22 Nov 1715; and Elizabeth, b. 9 Mar 1719.  These are the
same four children named in the will, and the oldest son was the one named
executor.

Which Benjamin WHITNEY was it who married Elizabeth FISKE?  There are three
candidates:
  A. Benjamin-3 WHITNEY, son of John-2 and Ruth (REYNOLDS) WHITNEY (John-1), b.
    28 Nov 1660, Watertown, MA.
  B. Benjamin-4 WHITNEY, son of Joseph-3 and Martha (BEACH) WHITNEY (John-2,
    John-1), born 31 Jan 1684/5, Watertown, MA.
  C. Benjamin-4 WHITNEY, son of Benjamin-3 and Abigail (HAGAR) WHITNEY (John-2,
    John-1), b. ca. 1691, Watertown, MA.
There are other individuals named Benjamin WHITNEY, but they did not live in
Watertown at this period.

In an earlier posting, I showed that it was (C) who died 13 Nov 1713,
Watertown, MA, as "Benjamin WHITNEY, Jr.", so he is eliminated.

(A) married, 30 Mar 1687, Watertown, Abigail HAGAR, and had six children:
  1. Abigail-4, b. 3 May 1688, m. Richard SAWTELL
  2. Benjamin-4, b. ca. 1691, d. 13 Nov 1713 (=C above), unmarried.
  3. John-4, b. 15 Jun 1694, m. Beriah BEMIS
  4. David-4, b. 16 Jun 1697, m. Rebecca FILLEBROWN
  5. Ruth-4, b. 10 Jul 1698, m. John BOND
  6. Daniel-4, b. 17 Jul 1700, m. Dorothy TAINTER
As nearly as we can tell, all these except the second, Benjamin-4, were living
in 1736.  If (A) married secondly Elizabeth FISKE in 1709/10, and died in 1736,
why weren't these children mentioned in the will?  There is no good reason to
explain this.

As a result, I conclude that it was (B) who married Elizabeth FISKE in 1709/10
and left the 1736 will.  Supporting this conclusion is the fact that (B) had a
brother John-4 WHITNEY, b. 29 Jul 1680, who is the most likely candidate for
the witness to the 1736 will and the surety on the executor's bond for Joseph-5
WHITNEY.

By the way, no death record or probate records have been found for (A), which
would have been helpful in sorting out this situation.

According to Henry Bond, _Genealogies_and_History_of_Watertown_, vol. 1, p.
644, Abigail-3 (WHITNEY) HUTCHINS, daughter of Joshua-2 and Abigail (TARBELL)
WHITNEY, was b. 1673, and d. 1705 in Groton.  She m. 1692, John HUTCHINS, and
had two sons and three daughters.  The only child on whom I have any data is
John, Jr.  In Joshua WHITNEY's will, 17 Apr 1713, he mentions his eldest
daughter HUTCHINS's children:  her eldest son John HUTCHINS and the rest of
her children, all under 21, including her three daughters.  (Middlesex County
Probate Files, #24703)

Hi All.
    I have some info that might help someone.  In the search for my Great
Grandfather Daniel James Whitney, wife Dilly Jane, children, Harvey, Delmar,
Ida, Benjamin and Marquis, I wrote National Archives seeking info as to
whether he might have been in the Civil War.
    I received back a bunch of copies about the service in that War, about
another Daniel J. Whitney, but wasn't the right one.  He was born January 22,
1833, in Canajoharie, N. H. was a farmer before service, died in Glenville,
N. Y. Nov. 4, 1912.  His wife was name Adeline  Tiffany, married September 3,
1857 at Saltspring, Otsogo Couinty, N. Y.  His children were James E.
Whitney, born Jan. 17, 1860, William born  May 13, 1868, Emma S., born August
11, 1871, Charles born Sept. 26, 1874, Cora Bell, born Feb. 21, 1877, Arthur,
born Aug  16, 1882.  Daniel served as a private in Company B, 115th Regiment
of New York, beginning August 21, 1862.
      I have papers on all this and much more information about his health,
treatment, death, etc.,  If this fits anyone, if they will let me know their

According to Marvin Clayton Hutchins in his genealogy "Nicholas Hutchins
of Lynn and Groton", pub.1989, pp.1, 2,3, Abigail Whitney, daughter of
Joshua and Abigail (Tarbell) was b.1673 and d.1705/6. She was married
about 1692(prob. in Groton,Ma.) to John Hutchins. (She was his first
wife of three.) John Hutchins was b.3 Jun 1668 in Lynn, Mass. Bay Colony
and he died 20 Mar 1756 in Killingly, Conn. (His name sometimes spelled
Huchen(s) or Huchin.) His father was Nicholas Hutchins(same variations
in spelling) b.1637/8 and died Sept. 1693 intestate. Nicholas married
4 Apr. 1666, in Lynn, Elizabeth Farr, dau. of George and Elizabeth
(Stowers) Farr.(I have a little more info. on these people if wanted.)
      The children of John Hutchins and Abigail, all born in Groton,
were:   John b. 13 Oct. 1693    Joshua b. 5 Nov. 1696
        Abigail b. 14 Sept. 1698      Sarah b. 6 Sept. 1700
        Benjamin b. 17 Aug. 1705
The genealogist, Marvin Hutchins, is living in California and is quite
ill. I purchased a copy of the Hutchins book from him a few months ago.
(I live in Canada.) Hope this helps you out. (I hope to trace Nicholas
back to England one day, but am having trouble doing so.)
To the Whitney group: If I have incorrectly addressed this, please would
you see that Heidi gets it?!

I'm posting this to the WRG in  case it of interest to anyone else.

I've found the folowing information for you:

Ellen Frances Whitney was the 1st libraian in Corcord  appointed in 1873.  i was unable to find
any birth or marriage records, but did get a copy of the death record.  She died Apr.26,1933 at
90y 1m 5d.

Helen W. Whitney [niece to Ellen] was the second librarian for Corcord holding the post from
1899-1919.  I found no birth,marriage or death records for her.

Sarah L.[Whitney] Kelly, b. July 6,1838 [Concord VR pg 321]  she was the daug. of
William[born in Lincoln MA] and Sarah Wheeler. (I also found a sister Caroline Azubah Whitney
, b. Oct 18,1840).
Sarah Louisa Whitney married  William Kelly Jr. on Jan 20, 1861 in Lincoln MA.  Sarah was 22
yrs old at the time of marriage.  William was also 22 yrs old, living in Boston and was a Captain
of ship.  His parents were William and Jane Merrill.  Sarah d

The only Emma Kelly I could find was a death record of Emma daug of William Kelley and Jane
Merrill, date of death Jan.30,1925

I made photocopies of all I could so if you send me your snail mail address I'll send them along.

I have conclusive evidence that my antecedent Jesse Whitney married Mary
Sawyer in Saco, Maine in 1786. But I am not sure if she was the daughter of
David and Hepzibah Sawyer or one of David's brothers. Does anyone have
insight on this? If so please let me know with references.

I also am an antecedent of Thomas Dyer, Jr. of Saco through his son Elbridge,
who moved to Ohio. I am having trouble determining his lineage. Can someone
help?

        I did a search on my name, Jarvis Whitney, wth Webcrawler. It
listed my name on several websites as I do a newspaper column on wine that
also runs on the web (http://www.bcwine.com).
        But it also came up with an unusual entry -- a Jarvis Whitney
Greene born about 1940 in Idaho (mother: Fanny Whitney).
        The brief info was from a genealogy site somewhere but I couldn't
find any more information or the site (I'll try some more).
        Does anyone know of this individual.

  Thank you for the Whitney info you sent to me via snail mail.  I
appreciate your taking the time to do that.
  I wish that I was on-line.  My husband and I have been discussing
it for some time.  This is being sent to you by my son who is a student at
VCU here in Richmond.  Please feel free to contact me through his e-mail.
The only drawback is that he isn't at school everyday.  Hopefully, I will
be on-line in the near future.
  I do have the info which you sent to me.  In fact, I have spouses
(and some children) for all of Lovet's children with the exception of
Elizabeth J. and Lydia Emaline.  A friend found church records in
Spurgeon, IN which indicated Lydia ran off with a married man.  What I am
looking for are the parents of Lovet P. Whitney and his wife Marion
Hudgens (Huggins, etc.).  His mother's name was Sarah.  This was found on
a marriage permission in Butler Co., KY, for Lovet P. and for his brother
Simon.  Sarah later married a Joseph Hardgrove.  I know Marion's parents
were Elizabeth and William.  Wm died in Canada during the War of 1812.  I
would like more info on that family, also.
  Thanks again for your help.  I've been very frustrated trying to
find info on any SC Whitney families.  The only info I seem to be able to
find is on Whitney's from the New England states.  I'll be happy to have
anything you can send me on Whitney.
