Less than one week ago, Shawn Whitney suggested that we undertake the
project of converting the Pierce book to digital format. Since that time, I
have broken up the book into 5-page sets and have tried to organize
volunteers. Out of the 134 sets available, 5 have now been completed, 21
more have been adopted and are under way, and 1 has been scanned and is
ready to be adopted. This means that we are now 3.7% complete and 20%
adopted/complete. I think that this is fantastic progress in one week!
We're still working out some standards by which we can all follow so we'll
end up with something that looks fairly uniform, but we have a small list
compiled now so if you've been waiting to volunteer, just let me know.

You are free to pick which 5 pages you'd like to transcribe. Want to do
your great-grandfather's family? Just let me know and I'll look up the set
he falls in. Are 5 pages too much for you? Just let me know and I'll break
up some of the sets into smaller chunks.

I'd like to thank everyone who has volunteered so far and encourage others
to pitch in too. Imagine having all 664 pages of Pierce's book available
online! This will make it possible to search the entire text for any word

I just spent a few pleasant hours transcribing Pierce and highly recommend it
to anyone who wants to truly appreciate the magnitude and value of his
accomplishment. Having a digital version will be very useful as a step to what
this group seems to be heading toward, a 20th century Whitney Book, just in
time for the 21st!
On another note, after Robert Ward posted the 1850 Michigan Census of
Whitneys, I realized that from my research in Michigan and New York libraries,
I could identify about a third of them.  A while ago I started making notes,
from Pierce, Phoenix, and Michigan and county histories and census records on
each one listed.  As soon as I figure out the proper look and format, I will
post what I have on the web, with sources, and solicit additional
contributions.  This might be useful to researchers, also.  A. Whitney Brown

THE DASH

I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of his friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
from the beginning...to the end.
He noted that first came the date of her birth
and spoke of the second with tears,
but he said that what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth,
and now only those who loved her
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own:
the cars, the house, the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard,
"Are there things you'd like to change?"
For you never know how much time is left.
(You could be at "dash mid-range.")
If we could slow down enough to consider
what's true and what is real,
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.

And...be less quick to anger,
and show appreciation more,
and love the people in our lives
like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
and more often wear a smile,
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read
with your life's actions to rehash...

I have just begun research into my WHITNEY's. Well...my WHITNEY
(singular!). Here is what I have. I hope it looks familiar to someone
out there.

Lida WHITNEY (b. 1878, d. 1949) m. James Morley ZANDER (b. 1884, d.
1949). I only know of one child so far, James Morley ZANDER II (b. 10
Dec 1904 in St Charles, MI, m. 30 Dec 1925 in Saginaw, MI, to Ola Damon
MORDEN, d. 3 Jan 1963 in Saginaw, MI).

I don't have parents for Lida yet, or anything else for that matter! I'm
awaiting a death certificate from MI.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.

There is such a device.  Or, at least, a similar device. I have seen it
working at the Alden Library at
Ohio University in AThens, OH.  Actually, it is a scanner-type device that
attaches to the microfilm reader screen, and scans the image into a
computer.  What I saw was for enhancing the printed image, but it could
also be used to capture the file, I believe.  It doesn't scan the film
directly into the computer, but it will digitize the image for further
manipulation.  Anyone near a large University library might want to ask if
they have something similar.

I understand there is an R.L.Ward website with a lot of info as well.

Machines do exist that scan microfilm as .tiff files. I saw one at the
National Postmark Museum in some little town in Ohio when I was doing a news
story about the Postmark Museum.  Also, if anyone has ever visited the BLM
website, they have 3 million land patents from 1830 on down available for
download as .tiff files, and they must have done it with a machine from
microfilm.  They probably even have a machine to load that machine! (BTW it's
a great site for research.)
However, I think transcribing by hand is probably just as fast, because of the
tiny type and poor quality of Pierce.  But that machine would be perfect,
combined with OCR, for Phoenix, which is printed with much larger and more
legible type, if we ever decide to do that book.

where/what is "Fish Neighborhood" near Deacon Lum's?

Dear WRG:

I would like to ask someone with access to the printed book of Weston Vital
Records to check what seems to be a small discrepancy in our transcriptions of
the Whitney entries.  The matter concerns the two sons of Joseph-5 (John-4,
Joseph-3, John-2, John-1) and Mary (Child) Whitney who were named Abijah.  

According to the Waltham, MA, Vital Records, this Joseph Whitney and Mary
Child were married 3 Nov 1743 in Waltham.  In (our transcription of) the
Weston VR's the first child named Abijah is assigned a birthdate of 6 Sep
1741, over two years before the marriage.  Immediately after that entry is a
baptism for an Abijah Whitney dated 9 Sep 1744, with a further note that says
"b. last Thurs.", and I have always thought the first was simply a
transcription error and that the boy was born on Thursday, September 6th, and
baptised the following Sunday, September 9, 1744.

A few minutes ago I ran that through my calendar utility and found out that it
doesn't work.  The ninth of September occurs on a Wednesday in 1744, the sixth
would have been the previous Sunday, and the previous Thursday would have been
the third!   (Unless, of course, my calendar utility is making the mistake.)

The entry for the death of this first Abijah supports the theory that the
initial entry dated 1741 was a mistranscription, because the record of his
death on 4 Oct 1756 gives his age as 12 years.  I am really curious to know if
the entries in the book itself shed any light on this question.

Too much curiosity is sometimes a dangerous thing <G>

I came across the following on the Jefferson Co. NY GenWeb site and thought
maybe it may be a help to someone:

Mason Whitney was born in 1765. He married Dolly Ransom and they had five
children. Erastus Whitney, son of Mason, was born in Herkimer County, NY,
in 1797. At the age of 18 years he bought his time from his father and came
to this county, and engaged in clearing land in Theresa and Philadelphia,
Jefferson Co., NY. He married Mary, daughter of Moses Chadwick, of
Philadelphia, Jefferson Co.,
NY, in 1826, who died in 1872. He died in 1854, on the farm which he had
settled. He had five sons and three daughters, namely; William M., Seymour
M., Marion H. (deceased), Mason (deceased), Harriet M., Ann E. (Mrs.
Aldrich), George E., and Duane L. (deceased).

(Samuel-5, William-4, Nathanial-3, John-2, John-1) and his two wives
ELIZABETH GLAZIER and LEVINA GLAZIER.

Thank you for pointing out my error -- that these two women were COUSINS,
not sisters.  I will make sure my personal database reflects this fact.  Jon
Aston, keeper of the "official" John Whitney database, should make note of
these changes for the group.

My data for Abner's children comes mainly from the Vital Records of
Westminster, Mass. and Ashburnham, Mass. for the surname Whitney; Heywood's
History of Westminster and the Whitney Genealogy by Franklin Pierce.

This Mason is in Pierce as # 1315, the son of one of the three Micah
Whitneys. (John & Elinor line)
Mason is listed in the Herkimer County, NY, US Census 1800, 1820, 1830.

The Jefferson County, NY, Genweb site is wonderful!  However, there are a
few typos (in the original) in this info.  His wife was Dolly Rawson (not
Ransom).  And Erastus's wife was known as Betsey, at least in family
records and her own will.  I have some more info on this Whitney line if
anyone wants to compare notes on Herkimer County or Philadelphia
(Jefferson County), New York (NOT Pennsylvania).

Mason was born in Massachusetts.  Does anyone know the details of his move
to Herkimer County, NY?  Does anyone know of living descendants of Mason's
children other than Erastus?  Does anyone know anything of descendants of
Erastus other than Seymour Murray Whitney who moved to Georgia?

I am a recent subscriber to this group and was pleased to see that there is
some movement towards transcribing the Pierce book to a data base. However,
there are already some files on R. Ward's site that show some of the errors
in the book, and I have some others to list. If you are going to copy the
book as printed, I would like to suggest that you precede any available
search with a required visit to the error files. No sense in copying known
errors for a faulty genealogy.

The errors I have listed here were handwritten in the book I researched. The
person cited the NEHGR of Jan., 1984 as the source.

Pg. 36, # 176, Joshua is actually the man # 189 on page 37. That will change
him on page 58 so that his #176 father is not William, but is David, # 56.
That then makes the Joshua, # 189 on page 59 a son of this same William, #
54.
This of course messes up all the following generations of these two men. So
the rest of the pages that need correcting, and there may be more, begin
with page 111, # 540 who is a son of #176, needs to have his grandfather
changed to David.
On the same page, # 542, the line becomes Benjamin/Joshua, David, not
William.
On page 114, # 583, the father is Joshua and his father is William.
On page 116, # 585, Josiah/Joshua/WILLIAM, not David.
On page 116 again, # 586, same lineage as the above # 583.
Page 214, # 1411 & # 1413 need to be corrected.

Other errors in the book needing review are on page 61, # 198 should be #
203.
Page 71, # 276, David m Mehitable Dewing, d/o Henry & Mehitable on 7 Dec.,
1716 in Nedham, MA, per the NEHGS & page 213 of Nedham Vital Records. She
was born in Nedham on 6 Nov., 1720. The marriage year date was not scratched
out so I am assuming the person meant the year was still 1743.

On pages 113 & 114 the numbers 1490, 1491 & 1492 are duplicated and the
persons are not the same.

On page 261, # 1106 1/2 is really # 1886.

On page 367, # 2884, has a hand written note above his name, "of Parker,
Calif."

Has any one out there ever heard of a Glassford Whitney? I have been
searching for this man for over 25 years. He was my G-Great grandfather and
his son is as far back as I can trace. The son, Milton Whitney says he was
born in Licking Co., OH about 1817, his mother evidently died of childbirth,
his father left Milton in the care of a Spencer family and was never heard
from again. An old letter done about 1926 states that Milton's father was
from Mass. and married near Philadelphia, a woman whose name is thought to
have been Black. I am aware of the Whitney's that had the glass factory
across the river in Glassboro, NJ and a reading of the Glassboro Story,
which was recently provided on this site by Kathy Whitney Conlin, provided
no clue. I had thought the name Glassford might have become corrupted from
Glassboro. The old letter read that the father "was a Glassford Whitney".
After twenty five years you'll jump at any conclusion. I also have searched
the surname Glassford (Glasford) and have found two marriages of a Whitney
to a Glassford, both in Canada but the time frame does not seem to work out.
One of those marriages is found on page 112, # 560, David Whitney married
second to Mary Glassford, date unknown. The dates of the children are
unknown to me except for Calvin who was born 14 Jan., 1816 (date not in
Pierce).

Our plan is to transcribe the Pierce book word-for-word, including all
errors. After we finish, we will setup a procedure whereby people can bring
foreward errors. If the group agrees that there is indeed an error, a
notation or hot-link will be added directing researchers to a site or
addendum that fully describes the error and the reason for believing it to
be one. In this way we will end up with both an accurate digital version of
the book as well as a way to make sure researchers do not miss problems
that others have identified.

Thank you for the list of errors you sent. I will keep them here for when
we get to that stage of this process.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) all of the pages that you mention have been
adopted by other volunteers. Overall, we're currently 7% complete and 27%
adopted, but when looking at just the first 100 pages, we're 30% complete
and 90% adopted.

Dear Karen:

This is one of the marriage dates that stands in question in my original
posting.  I do tend to think, however, for geographical reasons, that the
Ebenezer Whitney who is the son of Amos and Sarah Payne Whitney is not the one
involved in the marriage we are interested in.  That Ebenezer was born 30 Dec
1749 in York, Maine, and is shown in my database as marrying a Mrs. Sarah
Thompson (widow) in Buxton, York, ME in 1779.

Does the FTM CD (is that Family Tree Maker?) give any sources for their data?
The transcription of the Whitney entries in the Uxbridge Vital Records shows
that same marriage information, but also says that Ebenezer is "of Montague"!
Was the source of the data at the Mormon Church's FHC the CD series known as
Ancestral File?  If so, those contain a lot of good information and pointers
for places to search, but cannot be taken as gospel because they are based on
submissions from thousands of people, whose genealogies are accepted
uncritically and whose research and documentation technique are unknown.

The problem I'm trying to resolve here is the conflict between the data
printed in the Vital Records of Uxbridge, which provides the Dec 28, 1776
date, and the Vital Records of Montague, which provide the Dec 28, 1786 date.
The Vital Records from which I take this data are, however, NOT the original
books of the MA Vital Records series, but transcriptions of the Whitney
entries in these books that have been collected by members of the Whitney
Research Group.  Since humans are involved, the possibility of transcription
error enters the picture.  That is why I asked for someone to check the actual
Uxbridge Vital Records book itself, to see if there was a mistranscription.     

Did your sources come up with a better or more certain birth date for Rachael
Paine Rawson?  Since my transcriptions are of the Whitney entries only, I
cannot look for such a birthdate.  That is another reason why I was hoping for
someone to actually look in the Uxbridge book at a library somewhere.

I guess the question is still open.  I'll try again with another query on the
Whitney list in hopes of finding some friend that has a town library with a
good collection of the MA VR series and who will do the lookups for us.

This is the first mention of Henry-1 WHITNEY in America that I have seen.
Very interesting!  It also pretty well settles that his son John-2 must
have been born in America, probably at Southold.  Possibly his first
wife belonged to one of the early families of Southold.

Could anyone please send me the information for page 615 and 617 of the
Pierce book?  A relative sent me a portion of the book and they left off
these pages.  I beleive that they have the information that I need on my
line of Whitneys.  I already have some information but I would love to see
what they say about James Lewis Whitney-(James L., Abraham J., James,
Samuel, Samuel, Nathaniel, John, John.) Listings 7402 and 7403 are his
brothers and I am sure that the following pages would have some information
about this James Lewis Whitney.

Discussion
     Hugh D. McLellan, in The History of Gorham, Maine, tells us that Josiah
Whitney, son of Nathaniel and Hannah (Day) Whitney was born in
Biddeford, Me and married both Hannah Barstow and Elizabeth Harding.
Marriage intentions are recorded, as shown, with Elizabeth Harding in
the Gorham Vital Records. However, F.C. Pierce gives a different account
of  Josiah.

     On page 120 of his Whitney genealogy, Pierce claims that #618 Josiah,
son of Nathaniel and Hannah (Molly), was born on Cape Cod instead of in
Biddeford, Me,  and he married Hannah Barstow. Pierce tells us on pages
120 and 229 that #618 Josiah, Sr. emigrated to Canada, had children
#1589 John and 1591 Eliab T. in Canada, along with other children, and
died in Salmon River, N.B. in 1810.  He then claims, on pg 229,  that
Josiah and Hannah's son, #1587 Josiah, Jr., was also born on Cape Cod
and married Elizabeth Harding. On page 229, #1587, he says Josiah, Jr.
and Elizabeth  had six children and resided in Gorham and Alfred, Me.
However, Pierce left Josiah, Sr. out of the stated lineage.  Or did he?
I don't think so.

     On page 37 of Pierce's work is the accounting of the children of #66
Nathaniel3 (Benjamin2, John1) and his wife, Sarah Ford Whitney. This
accounting does not include John, son of Nathaniel and Sarah Whitney,
who was born in Sherborn, Middlesex, Mass., 27 Nov 1716, and who became
Dr. John Whitney of Eastham on Cape Cod, Nantucket Island, and York, Me.
In fact, I can find no mention of this individual in Pierce's work. I
believe that this omission gave Pierce the opportunity to confuse the
Josiah born on Cape Cod to Dr. John Whitney and Jerusha Knowles with the
Josiah born in Biddeford, Me. to Nathaniel and Hannah Whitney (see
Biddeford VR above). This confusion led Pierce to list two families of
Josiah, son of Nathaniel. One was on page 120 (#618), the family of
Josiah and Hannah Barstow, and one on page 229 (#1587), the family of
Josiah and Elizabeth Harding. This was even further confused because he
first lised, on page 120, Elizabeth Harding as the wife of Josiah's son,
Josiah, Jr., then on page 229, she was the wife of Josiah, Sr. This
confusion is also reported in Hugh D. McLellan's History of Gorham,
Maine..

     I believe that the listing of the family of Josiah Whitney and Hannah
Barstow on page 120 is really a combination of the two families of Dr.
John Whitney by his first two wives, Jerusha Knowles and Margaret
Coffin,  along with the children of Dr. John's son Josiah.  Dr. John's
children by Jerusha Knowles, recorded at Eastham,  were Josiah, Seth and
John. His children by Margaret Coffin were Sarah (Sally), Margaret, and
John Coffin. These account for five of the nine children listed to
Josiah and Hannah Barstow. Noals was probably named after Jerusha
Knowles' family, and could be either Dr. John's or Josiah's son. I
believe that Eliab T., and possibly John (b. in Canada in 1781) and
Martha are the children of Josiah and Hannah Barstow.

     In addition, I believe that the listing on page 229 of the family of
Josiah and Elizabeth Harding is the family of Josiah, son of Nathaniel
and Hannah Day Whitney of Biddeford, Me., not Cape Cod.

     To summarize my proposal for a new framework for looking at this
puzzle,

1. Create an new ancestor line and descendants:
     Dr. John Whitney (Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), b. Sherborn, MA 27 Nov
1716; m.  first, at Eastham, MA 20 Sept 1739, Jersuha Knowles, d. of

Some Missing Puzzle Pieces

1. Who is Hannah Barstow? I can't find any record for her. As you can
see, there is a record of a  Josiah Whitney marrying a Hannah Turner in
Brookline, MA on 24 Jan 1771. This is interesting because Eliab's middle
name is Turner.(By the way, there are records for him in the Edgecomb,
Maine records if anyone is interested.) It has occurred to me that
Josiah of Biddeford may have indeed married Hannah Barstow before he
married Elizabeth Harding, leaving Josiah of Eastham to marry Hannah
Turner only. It seems that Hannah Barstow is a major missing puzzle
piece.

2. Is the John Whitney born in Toronto really the son of Josiah? Are
there any records?

3. Where did Pierce get the names Noals (Knowles?) and Martha as
children of Josiah?

4. If Josiah Sears was appointed guardian of Dr. John's sons John and
Nathaniel in 1751, then what happened to Josiah and Seth? Were they
apprenticed to someone, or were they with their father, or what? By
1751, Dr. John had two more children by Margaret Coffin, and at third
was due shortly in York. If they were with Dr. John, why are they not
mentioned in the York vital records, as Sarah was?

     If this puzzle generates as much e-mail as the Pierce genealogy copying
project, it should be solved in no-time! Just think, it even has food
for thought for our Canadian cousins!

The following is taken from the Records of Gorham, Maine, Marquis F.
King, second edition, 1991:
     Page 100, Marriages:
          Whitney, Joseph, Jr. with Mary Freeman, May 16, 1801

     Page 172, Births:
          Whitney, of Joseph and Betty (Phinney), his second wife,
               Joseph, Oct. 18, 1784
          Whitney, of Joseph, Jr. and Mary
               Vrania, May 7, 1802
          
One would think that the Joseph, Jr. here is Joseph6  (Joseph5, Abel4,
Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), and that he is the son of Joseph and
Betty (Phinney) Whitney. Also, from the same source:

     Page 171, Births:
          Whitney, of Isaac and Mary
               Joseph, August 26, 1776

This particular Joseph Whitney would be Joseph6 (Isaac5, Isaac4,
Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1). Thus, the two Josephs in question are of
the same generation, and both were born and and one was married  in
Gorham, Maine.

     The following are taken from the Vital Records of Topsham, Maine To The
Year 1892, Volume II, Mary Pelham Hill; published for the Maine
Historical Society in 1930:

     Page 279, Marriages:
          Joseph Whitney of Lubec, Maine and Nancy Hunter of Topsham intentions
          
published 6 December 1818.

     Page 18, Births:
          Mary, daughter of Arthur Hunter and Sarah (Winehill) _________ (P.R.)

     In The History of Gorham, Maine, Hugh D. McLellan, 1992, Picton Press,
we find the following:
     Page 833: Mr. (Joseph) Whitney married, in 1781, Betty, daughter of
Col. Edmund    Phinney. Children:
          Joseph, b. Oct 18, 1784, m. Mary Hunter of Topsham.
     This marriage of Joseph to Mary Hunter is in contradiction to the vital
records as mentioned above, which say that Joseph Whitney, Jr. married
Mary Freeman.

     Page 834: Isaac Whitney, son of Isaac married Mary Crockett. Children:
          Joseph, b. Aug 26, 1776, m. Mary Freeman, Aug. 2, 1801
     If  Joseph Whitney, Jr. married Mary Freeman, then this marriage is
incorrect, because this is Joseph, son of Isaac, not Joseph, Jr.

     So, at first glance it would appear that McLellan reported the marriage
of  Mary Freeman to the wrong Joseph Whitney. Confounding the picture,
however, is the ages of the Joseph Whitneys. If Joseph, Jr. did marry
Mary Freeman, as the vital records indicate, rather than Mary Hunter, as
McLellan reports, then he would have been only sixteen years old at the
time. One would think it more probable that Joseph, son of Isaac,
married Mary Freeman, as McLellan reports, because he would have been
twenty-six years old at the time.

     Is it possible that Joseph, son of Isaac, could have been known as
Joseph, Jr.? I can find no will in the Maine Probate Extracts to help
with this puzzle. Can anyone contribute incite to the problem?

It should be noted that in colonial times, two men or the same name living
in the same town at the same time, even if unrelated, were often called
"Sr." and "Jr." to differentiate them.  Of course senior means, literally,
older, and junior means younger, so this is a more literal usage than is
common today.  Probably Joseph, son of Joseph, would be called Joseph,
3rd, since he was the third oldest of the trio.  I have experience with
two cases where the numbers got up as high as "5th"!

My guess is that McLellan was right, and Joseph, Jr., was son of Isaac.

I have been trying to make a link on some Whitneys
found in Nova Scotia prior to the arrival of the
Loyalists in 1783 after the Revolution.

John Whitney whose wife was Desire and a son
John were in Horton (now Kentville) Nova Scotia
in 1761.

John Whitney was a Planter who came from New
England to Nova Scotia to fill the vacuum left by
the departure of the Acadians. (Maybe the same
John.)

Elisha Whitney whose wife was Lydia Boys
lived at Hanley Mountain, Nova Scotia and had a
daughter Elizabeth who married William Worthylake.
Elizabeth was born 4 Dec 1795. Elisha also had a
daughter Amy.

Can anyone make the link from these few details ??

Allan:

I just received today as a birthday present the CD with the Middlesex County
MA VR.   I only got a brief chance to look at it for your Abijah Whitney
question, but I am pleased to report that it lists the birth of Abijah to
Joseph and Mary Whitney on Sep 6 1744.

There are numerous references to the name Abijah Whitney in the Weston VR
and I do not have this time right now to check them all.  I don't know if
the baptism records are included, but the book had more than the standard B,D&M.

Are you aware of these CD's?  Some are available from NEHGS, which is where
my Essex and Middlesex Cty ones are from.  They include scanned copies of
the printed VR published ca 1850 and a searchable index.  These two CDs are
$100 each.  Some smaller counties are cheaper.  Check the NEHGS web page.

months, 2 days. Mr. Gerrish said that the database lists Rachel's father as
Abram, married to Ann Conant.
He is searching for a marriage record of Ann Conant to ascertain the proper

We have Abraham-6 WHITNEY [Abraham-5, Benjamin-4, John-3, Benjamin-2, John-1],
b. 4 Jul 1798, Lisbon, ME, d. 7 Mar 1850, bur. Durham, ME, who m. Ann Conant
(no date), b. 1800, Topsham, ME, d. 1888, bur. Durham, ME.  See
<http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/john/john66.html#i158> for him and his
ancestry.  I know nothing of his children.  There is no Abraham WHITNEY in the
New Hampshire census indexes for 1820, 1830, 1840, or 1850.  Abraham WHITNEY,
II, appears in Lisbon in 1820 (p. 228) and 1830 (p. 200), Abra. WHITNEY is
there in 1840 (p. 342), and Ann WHITNEY there in 1850 (p. 427).

By the way, surely 15 Oct 1820 was meant as Rachel's birth date, rather than
1802.

To all the Whitney list folks who have participated in collecting gedcom data,
setting up websites, etc.
     This list has wonderful resources!  I am proud of being a Whitney when I tell
other surname lists about this one.  This list has lived up to what has often
been printed about our ancestors and individuals of integrity well educated
and committed to excellence.
     The Owen list would like to accumulate the various lines and keep them in
some fashion that would make them available to future Owen researchers.  I
sent those interested to Robert Ward's site as an example of what can be done.
All who have visited it have come back quite impressed.
     Would any and all of you that had anything to do with the accumulation and
Internet publishing of research material and the gathering of and
discriminating of gedcoms please email me with comments, instructions,
technical information and  advice.  I need to know everything you have time to
share.  No one with computer expertise has come forward to assist except one
individual who wants to be paid.
     Is there a way to have a free web site large enough for this purpose?  Or do
we need to pay for a web site?  If so, what would be the approximate cost?
     Those of you with the master gedcom databases - what kind of computer and how
much disk space (any other needs, too?) is needed?  And what software are you
using to maintain, add to, etc. the database?  I like the idea that different
people keep different lines.  Is this working well?
     Allen, I know you have been a part of this list from the beginning.  Any
suggestions?  Any warnings?

        I found this entry in "Marriage Returns of Cumberland County, Maine
,prior to 1892":  Rachel Whitney & William Gerrish Jr. both of Durham m.7
Dec 1843(In Durham).  I did not find mention of Ann Conant's marriage in
any of my Maine references.
        Some personal observations:  Durham is near to Lisbon and both are
on the Androscoggin River,  as is Berlin NH  high up near to the Maine
border.   I began looking for the Whitneys I knew of who settled in that
vicinity.  William (Abner, John, Isaiah, Thomas, John) and his wife Hannah
Bangs of Standish had a son William m. Anna Hancock 1818(lived and died in
Convene section of Sebago), and they in turn had William H. b. 1822, m.
Hannah Douglas and lived and died in Rangeley ME(also near to the
headwaters of the Androscoggin). None of this seems to help, but I was
hoping, as William and Hannah Bangs had few other children, some of whom
settled in Upton in the vicinity of the ME/NH border.    I don't know that
I have helped any, but this intrigued me as I came from the western hills
of Maine, and I also have an Elizabeth Conant, ancestor, who was b. ca 1745
in Falmouth, ME(too early).  Cheers, Jan

Flattery will get you everywhere!  ;-)  I am gratified by the praise you and your
friends have provided.

I would be happy to tell you whatever you might want to know about my role in the
project.

Not having a volunteer with computer expertise will make any such project MUCH
more difficult.  We in the WRG are blessed with several.

You can get free web sites from GeoCities.  I don't know how large.  You can get
a site from rootsweb.com, but have to support them with a yearly donation whose
size I am not sure of.  Of course this donation supports a *very* worthy cause!
(I am a donor, although I don't have a website there.)  I pay for my own through
Erol's, which is local to the East Coast.

I strongly recommend the use of The Master Genealogist (TMG).  For information on
this program, see <http://www.whollygenes.com/>.  It does not run on Macintoshes,
so don't get one of those if you can avoid it.  Any 386, 486, or Pentium-based
computer (IBM-compatible PC) works.  My WHITNEY database consisting of about 8000
individuals occupies less than 5 megabytes of space on my hard drive.  At least
16 megabytes of RAM computer memory are recommended.  As to operating system, you
can use MS-DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 95 or 98.

The more advanced versions of TMG can produce indexed descendancy reports like
the one at <http://www.erols.com/rlward1/henry/index.html> with very little
additional work.  (I used TMG v3.0 for this one.)  The resulting files are quite
large, and take a long time to load, however.  When I did the descendancy reports
at <http://www.erols.com/rlward1/john/index.html>, I tried to break the files up
into shorter ones.  This was much more work, but results in files which can load
much more rapidly.

All the remaining web pages at my website were produced by me using a word
processor, and saving the pages in ASCII Text format.  This is rather time-
intensive, and requires a fair knowledge of HTML.  Modern web editors, such as
Netscape Page Composer, can produce acceptable pages with very little knowledge
of HTML.  There are more than a dozen such programs on the market.

Here's a warning:  watch out for copyright problems.  There is a fair-use
doctrine which allows some extraction of copyrighted material, but not wholesale
reproduction of large quantities of the same.  Even if you are not making a
profit from the copying, you may be affecting the author's poential profit.
Materials out of copyright are no problem, of course.  Get some advice from
someone with expertise in the new patent laws.

Here's another:  expunge all living individuals from data published on or
distributed through your web pages.

My info comes from vital records of Lisbon, ME (film #0011330, Family History
Library, Salt Lake City, UT), p. 119:

  Abraham Whitney and Ann Conant of Topsham -- publ May 14, 1820.
     Children:  Rachel, b. Oct 14, 1820; Mehitable, b. Apr 1, 1822; William
Woodard, b Mar 14, 1825; Apphia Ann, b. July 20, 1827; Louisa Augusta, b. Feb
9, 1831

Other info provided from card file of town records for Lisbon, ME, states that
Abraham III, husband of Ann Conant, died March 7, 1850.  Also Abraham married
Judith Francis in 1818.  I did not pursue Judith, but the card indicates there
is more on her on pages 212 and 219.

Other information I picked up is that Abraham III is son of Abraham and Apphia
(Coombs) Whitney and grandson of Benjamin and Mercy (Hinckley) Whitney.
(I can't cite my source off hand in this instance.)

I want to appologize to all the Whitney group.  About a month ago, I was
working in a Microsoft Word97 genealogy file, when all of a sudden a
warning came up on my screen.  "YOU HAVE BEEN HACKED."  Well, I found
that when I went to my servers homepage that a "PORNO" (I mean big time)
site came up.  I called my server and they thought they had it taken
care of, but somehow this "hacker" invaded my email.  I didn't discover
until this last week that my email was going to others with a porno
extension.  My son was the one that told me.  (Only he didn't realize
what it was until I told him.)  I then called my server again, and it
took them a full day to "dig" through my machine to find out where all
the infiltration happened.  I think it is fixed now.

WARNING:  My server said that this happens a lot when people have the
ICQ or Chat rooms on line.

I happened to have ICQ at the time.  I no longer have that on my
machine.  Even though the people I was "talking" to didn't invade my
machine, somebody got my ICQ number and invaded it.

I hope that you will accept my appology.  It was a total embarrasment.
I was also very, very angry.  I fought having the internet for that very
reason, and now it happened.  Just be aware that if you get a warning
like that, IMMEDIATELY UNPLUG YOUR MACHINE!!!!!!!!!!

Orlando WHITNEY was b. 30 Nov 1766 in Winchester, NH, son of James and Mary
(THAYER) WHITNEY (Winchester VR 2:406).  He and Asenath had at least three
children:

I am not sure of the parentage of his father James WHITNEY, but I think he

Brookline, MA.

I think this connects with the Whitneys who were original settlers of
Broome County, New York.

Also, an early plantation owner in Louisiana was a Mr. Daniel Clark,
whose daughter Mary  married William Whitney of Broome County, New
York.

My family's William Whitney married Sarah Compton, the daughter of
Joseph Compton and Anna VanDeusen of New York.  There was a Joseph
Compton who was an original settler of Broome County, New York.  The
VanDeusen Family originally settled in Albany, New York.

I need help putting all of this together.   There must be an
additional generation or so in between these Whitneys.   Any ideas,
anyone?

She was probably born around 1870-1880 and married Levi H. Webb around 1895.
They had  five children: Les, Ruth, George, Marvin and Lloyd. They spent most
of the 1900's in Nebraska, ending up in Randolph until their deaths in the
1960s (?).

Preface
In the summer of 1900 Mr. Frederick Pierce of Chicago, author of the Field
and other genealogies, visited Conway and began the preparation of a history
of the town. He secured a mass of material which he proposed to publish in
two volumes. Lack of financial support delayed the publication until the
author’s death in 1903. His estate proceed to be insolvent and after
unsuccessful attempts to sell the manuscript it was deposited with the town
of Conway by permission of the Judge of Probate.
 At the annual town meeting in 1914 a committee consisting of Rev. E. L.
Chute, H. W. Delabarre, C. F. Elmer, and C. L. Parsons was appointed to
arrange for a celebration of the 150th anniversary of Conway in 1917. Mr.
Billings died in 1915 and Rev. Charles S. Pease was elected to fill the
vacancy. In 1916 Mr. Chute removed from town and Mr. Alvin C. Boice
succeeded him on the committee. This committee was authorized by the town to
publish a brief history of Conway based upon the Pierce manuscript and Rev.
Charles S. Pease was appointed editor for that purpose.
 In the task of preparing a history for publication the editor has been
assisted by those whose names appear at the head of the various chapters.
Much of the material in the Pierce manuscript proved to be of doubtful
historical value and all of it was in need of careful revision. Each author
has accordingly made independent researches and has written his chapter or
section in his own way. The Genealogy has been carefully revised and to a
large extent rearranged. The chapter on the first century was taken from the
history of Conway’s centennial and the chapter on the Field Library is a
memorial which Dr. Rice prepared by request of the Field family. The chapter
on useful men and women was written expressly for the Pierce history.
 The illustrations have been contributed by different people, we are
especially indebted to the Misses Frances and Mary Allen of old Deerfield
for the use of a series of photographs taken about 1890, and to Miss.
Florence Howland of Conway for pictures of more recent date.
 The committee has not attempted to produce a complete history of Conway.
This would be impossible. The aim has been rather to prepare a readable and
reasonably comprehensive account of the past one hundred and fifty years.
The work has been a labor of love by Conway people, who without literary
experience and with little time at their disposal for such employment have
simply tried to make a permanent record of the more important facts in the
history of the town.

Am searching for information on the New Orleans Whitneys of the turn
of the century.  They were a well-connected family, having owned a
plantation and owning the Whitney Central National Bank and Trust.
The particular Whitney I am searching for is Nelson Whitney.  He had a
home (possibly in Metairie) designed by a nationally known architect.
He was my husband's natural grandfather.  I would like to know who
Nelson's parents were and what their connection is to other Whitneys.
Have been told they were related to the NY and Boston Whitneys.
Please help if you can, even some kind of lead to go on.

I'm looking for information on a Oliver Whitney that was married to Malinda
Marson in Hancock County Mississippi on 03/29/1866.
The Whitney family was in the shipping business and I understand  that he
went back to the Northeast to handle the family business some time between
1867 and 1870. He must have been in his early twenties and was working in
conjunction with the lumber business. There was a 3 year old daughter Olive
and  the 22 year old wife Melinda listed in the 1870 Hancock County Census,
but Oliver had already left for the Northeast when the census was taken that
year. Any information would be appreciated.

Beach??

Joseph-3 Whitney is the son of John Whitney and Ruth Reynolds.

I am looking for information about Mary Ann Whitney,b.April 9,1844 in
Campton, Illinois and died in IL., WI., or MI.Family records are very
sketchy and names are given only as nicknames. Her father's first name
may have been Joe and her mother was Mariah Blood, daughter of Upham
Blood. Mary Ann had two brother's whose names were Daniel and John and
they lived in Wasco, Illinois( a town that now seems to have
disappeared.).John was in the Civil War but I can't find the records.I
have no idea where her parents were from. If anyone can find a
connection with their family I will appreciate any leads or information.

Dear Virginia:

The US Geological Survey doesn't recognize the existence of Campton, but its
website does show Wasco as being in Kane County, just west and a little south
and west of Elgin, IL, north and a little west of Aurora and about 5 miles
straight west of St. Charles, IL.  A town called Compton is shown in
(currently) Lee County, about 25 miles straight southwest of DeKalb, and maybe
40 - 45 miles southwest of Wasco.

The Illinois 1850 Census Index for Whitneys shows three households in Kane
County, all in a town called Compton.  They are John Whitney, Mariah Whitney
and Mark Whitney.  You might want to try and find a source for the Census
Microfilm for Kane County in 1850 and look at all three households.  Of
course, your best bet is the one headed by Mariah - perhaps her husband had
only recently died.

Also, is there any indication why they both died on the same day?  If they
perished in a newsworthy event like a disaster or fire, perhaps there might be
information about the occurance in a nearby newspaper.

Can you give us any help at all about the time frame?  Early 20th?  Late 19th?
Middle 1800's?  Where to look depends on a combination of data that is known
leading to possible places to search.

After exactly one month, our ambitious Pierce Project is 26% complete and 46%
adopted. I have several people currently scanning and photocopying pages for
other volunteers to transcribe. If anything, we have more volunteers than I
can
currently handle (though don't let that prevent you from volunteering!) My
backlog of getting scans or photocopies to volunteers should clear up now
that others are helping in the scanning process.

NEW! I have placed scanned images of 74 pages of Pierce's book online at this
site. I figured that as long as we are scanning and sending the pages to

Larry is basically suggesting a project similar to the Pierce Project
(see http://www.gentree.com/whitney/pierce/ ). Since the Phoenix book
on the descendants of Henry Whitney is a bit clearer than the Pierce
book on the descendants of John Whitney, it is possible that OCR might
produce better results. OCR is needed because you can't search scanned
images - you need a transcription for that.

P.S. Someone else is going to have to undertake this project, but I
would suggest waiting until after the Pierce Project is complete so as
not to fight for volunteers. If / when we undertake this project, I would
be happy to provide web space for it.

     Whitney, Capt. Ebenezer, died at New Canaan, Conn., on Sun., the 3d
inst., in his 66th year. (Apr. 9, 1808)
