The Dakotas were part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The eastern parts were part of the Iowa Territory from 1836 to 1849, and part of the Minnesota Territory from 1849 to 1858. The western parts were part of the Nebraska Territory from 1854 to 1861, and part of the Dakota Territory from 1861 to 1889. North and South Dakota were formed from the Dakota Territory in 1889.
