1.^  His parentage is proven by his birth record and his mention in his father's will.

4.^  The date is estimated from her age and the birth of their oldest child.

5.^  Her identity as a daughter of Shadrach Hapgood is just short of proof. Shadrach Hapgood had a daughter Sarah, whose age from his probate records corresponds to the age at death of Jonathan Whitney's widow. Jonathan's brother married Sarah's sister. Jonathan and Sarah named a son Shadrach, a very unusual name, presumably for Sarah's father. The case is circumstantial, but very likely. It was apparently first stated by William Barry, A History of Framingham, Massachusetts, ... (1847), and has been accepted by all authorities since (Bond, Morse, Temple, H. A. Whitney, Savage, W. L. Whitney, Pierce, Torrey, Smith & Sanborn), although some express a minor degree of doubt.

7.^  "Sarah [Whitney], relict John, "late of Concord", [died] July 26, 1746, in her 75y.", according to Townsend, Massachusetts, Vital Records. p. 348. Of course, she was actually relict of Jonathan, not John.
