He also owned a portfolio of rental residences in Rochester, NY, until he retired to Miami, FL where he sold real estate.

He married Adeline Shockey, eventually settling in Dansville, NY where he began a prosperous appliance and electronics business with a large factory storefront named "Whitney's." Had three children, Robert Earl Jr., Barbara, and Virginia Ellen. I am the first and only child of Robert Earl Whitney, Jr. (b. February 1924) and his wife Margaret Anna (Wohlleben) Whitney (b.February 1937.) I was raised by my paternal Whitney grandparents and remember my great grandfather who lived with us in Dansville until his death in 1961 or 1962. He would hold my hand and go for walks in town and his room smelt like sweet cigars.
