Thanks for registering on this website, and for telling us about your Whitney ancestry. We hope we can collaborate to discover more Whitney information.

We already had family group pages for Adelbert, Dexter, and Asa. I took the liberty of using the information you supplied and the information from them to edit your lineage page.

You clearly have dates we don't. The exact dates of Dexter's birth and death are new to us, and the exact birth date of Asa is, too. Can you tell us the sources for those dates? By the way, a man born in 1774 probably couldn't fight in the American Revolution (1775-1783), being too young.

Look over the pages for your ancestors, and see what other information you might be able to supply. If you have the data, I'd be happy to create a family group page for Erwin B. Whitney. Let me know how we can help you.

Asa Taft and Asa Whitney

Matt,

There was an Asa Taft, son of Silas and Elizabeth (Cruff) Taft, born 29 Apr 1774, Uxbridge, MA, and died 17 Mar 1839, Triangle, NY. He apparently had two wives: Sarah⁶ Whitney and Lucy Fuller. The intentions of marriage of Asa Taft and Sarah⁶ Whitney were published 18 Sep 1794, Peru, MA. The intentions of marriage of Asa Whitney and Joanna Jackson were published 31 Oct 1791, Peru, MA. Sarah was daughter of John⁵ and Molley (Carey) Whitney. It is possible, but not proven, that Sarah⁶ (Whitney) Taft was a sister of Asa Whitney.

Sarah⁶ (Whitney) Taft is said to have died in 1813. Asa and Sarah⁶ (Whitney) Taft are credited with the following children:

1. Asa Taft, b. 22 Sep 1794, Peru, MA.
2. Lurancy Taft, b. 28 Mar 1796, Peru, MA.
3. Amanda Taft, b. 31 Dec 1798, Peru, MA.
4. Joel Cruff Taft, b. 25 Dec 1800, Schoharie, NY.
5. Seth Taft, b. 2 May 1803, Triangle, NY.
6. John Whitney Taft, b. 24 Jan 1805, Greene, NY.

Asa and Lucy (Fuller) Taft are credited with the following children:

1. Lucy Wilson Taft, b. Triangle, NY
2. Sarah Jane Taft, b. 1821, Triangle, NY
3. James F. Taft, b. 1822, Triangle, NY
4. Ambrose Taft, b. 1825, NY

So you see that Asa Taft and Asa Whitney both moved from Peru, MA, to Triangle, NY. "Birds of a feather flock together."

A member public tree at Ancestry.com says that Asa and Joanna (Jackson) Whitney had the following two (additional) children:

1. Chauncey Whitney, b. ca. 1796; d. ca. 1872; m. ca. 1819, Amanda Taft (the one above), b. 31 Dec 1798, Peru, MA, d. 7 Feb 1872, Broome Co., NY. If Asa and Sarah were siblings, then this couple would be first cousins.
2. Thomas Whitney, b. ca. 1799, NY; d. after 1860. This is wrong. The census record for 1860 cited shows a Thomas Whitney, but he was 81, not 61, and that man was Family:Whitney, Thomas (1778-1863), of a different family.

The same tree also gives an incorrect parentage for Asa, so its credibility is a bit suspect.

I have made some changes to the family group pages for John, Jabez, Asa, and Chauncey Whitney, to reflect this new information and the theories about this matter. See what you think.
