Henry B.8 Whitney (Lucius7, Cornelius6, Cornelius5, Matthias4, Cornelius3, Joshua2, John1), born Sand Bank, New York, 2 May 1838; married 28 Apr 1861, Martha H. Smith, born 22 Sep 1840.
"When he was about four years old his father moved to Chaumont, Jefferson County, New York; from there he moved to La Forgeville, Jefferson County, New York; from there to Redfield, Oswego County; then to Sandy Creek, Oswego County, New York; there Henry began to learn the carriage maker's trade. In 1857 he moved to Pulaski, New York, and has resided there ever since. 6 Aug 1862, he enlisted in County. B., 110 New York. V. I., Colorado. Littlejohn in command; reached Baltimore, Maryland. County. B. was detailed to guard the railroad; joined the regiment and embarked on the U. S. transport "Ericsson;" 4 Nov 1862; landed at Ship's Island 16 Dec 1862; left there Dec. 25; landed at Carrolton, Louisiana; went in camp 2 Jan 1863; went to Baton Rouge in March; was in action when Farragut run the Port Hudson batteries; then down the river to Algiers; by railroad to Berwick bay; Apr. 13 and 14 was in the battle of Bisland; at Opelusas, Louisiana,the company was detached with three other companies; on their return to Berwick were attacked by Gen. Dick Taylor's army and quite a number killed and wounded. We were hurried to Port Hudson by railroad and steamboat, landing at Springfield, May 29. The next day they were in our position about the center of the line; was put in the charge on June 14. June 20 we crossed the river and joined the regiment guarding that side of the river, until Port Hudson surrendered, July 9; went in the hospital Aug. 22; joined the company again Nov. 17 at New Iberia, Louisiana: Jan. 4 marched to Franklin. He was detailed in the Div. Q. M. office; went to duty again Feb. 19; regiment arrived at Fort Jefferson, Florida, Feb. 28; remained there until Aug., when he embarked for home, leaving a good many of our comrades, who died from the fevers of that climate. Since his arrival at home he has worked at his trade in this village;" resided Pulaski, New York.
