On 29 April 1879 from Barron Co., Wisconsin Charles A. Whitney signed a Declaration for Original Invalid Pension. He is a resident of Chetek, Barron Co., WI. He enrolled on 20 October 1861 in Co. C, 13th Regiment of U.S. Infantry commanded by Lt. Colonel Burbanks. He was honorably discharged at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri on 29 February 1862. He is 35 years old; 5 feet 10 inches tall; light complexion; dark hair; and blue eyes. On 24 December 1861 while in the line of duty at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri he was taken ill with measles. This settled on the lungs, and he has had serious trouble with his lungs ever since. He is so incapacitated that he cannot work for a living. He was treated at Jefferson Barracks four times before his discharge. He had previously served for three years in the 30th Wisconsin Volunteers. Since discharge he has resided in the City of Chippewa Falls, WI, where he is a carpenter. He had been a carpenter before his service, and is now partially disabled. Charles received a pension.
In January 1898 Charles answered an inquiry from the Bureau of Pensions. He is married to Christine Whitney, nee Christina Gilbertson. They were married 22 February 1871 by Rev. William Priddy. The marriage was certified and recorded at Chippewa Falls, Chippewa Co., WI. Neither were previously married. They have three living children: Carrie M. Whitney, b. 22 March 1872; Anton Whitney, b. 15 October 1882; Etta A. Whitney, b. 23 March 1888.
In a declaration signed on 7 January 1914, he is totally disabled, and more information is added. His enrollment into the 13th U.S. Infantry took place at Lafayette, Chippewa Co., WI. At that time his occupation was mill wright. He was born 29 December 1843 at Phillips, Franklin Co., ME. Since leaving the service re had resided at Monroe Co., WI for 6 months; Bloomer, Chippewa Co., WI for 4 years; and in Baron Co., WI from then to date. He presently resides in Chetek, Baron Co., WI.
Additional testimony reveals he lived in the town of Greenfield, Monroe Co., Wisconsin in the spring of 1858, then lived in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, where he worked in the mills in the summer and logging wood in the winter until the time of his enlistment in 1861. Between Feb 1862 and August 1862, he lived in Lafayette, Chippewa Co., with Mr. N.C. Bates
On 20 February 1915 Charles answered another inquiry from the Bureau of Pensions. He currently resides at Chippewa Falls, WI. He had married Christine Gilbertson at Bloomer, Chippewa Co., WI, and the marriage is probably recorded at Chippewa Falls. His wife presently resides with him. He lists the names and births of all of his children, both alive and dead: Caroline M. Whitney, b. 22 March 1872; Wellington J. Whitney, b. 5 April 1876, died 24 August 1888; Antone C. Whitney, b. 3 February 1880; Etta A. Whitney. b. 18 October 1882.
On 9 May 1928 from Barron Co., WI Christina Whitney signed a Declaration for Widow’s Pension. She was born 25 August 1852 at Christiana, Norway. She is the widow of Charles A. Whitney, who died 6 April 1928 at Chetek, WI. They were married 22 February 1871 at Chippewa Falls, WI by Rev. Priddy. Charles A. Whitney was buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Chetek, WI on 11 April 1928.
