S. Vol. Infantry; was appointed corporal in Sept 1862, third-sergeant 1 Sept. 1863, and second sergeant in Ap. 1864; and was killed, 5 May 1864, in the battle of The Wilderness. His body fell into the hands of the enemy, and his burial place is unknown.
5337 II. Lyman John Whitney, b. at Barre, N.Y., 14 Aug. 1841; a farmer; married there, 25 Dec. 1865, Celia Crittenden, dau. of Osee and Laura (Newton) Crittenden. They settled in Westburgh, Iowa, and were living there in 1874. He enlisted in 1861, in the 4th Reg., Ohio Vol. Cavalry; served for seven months; and was discharged on account of the failure of his health. 13249
5338 III. Maria Elizabeth Whitney, b. at Shelby, N.Y., 10 May 1843; married at Churchville, in Riga, N.Y., 9 March 1862, by Rev. Mr. McNiel, Methodist Episcopal, to James V. Dewey, a farmer and arboriculturist, who was born at Gates, N.Y., 28 Aug. 1837, son of Hon. Joseph and Maria (Ranney) Dewey. They dwelt at Penfield, N.Y., till the Autumn of 1862; then settled at Gates; moved, in the Spring of 1863, to Ogden, N.Y., and thence, in the Spring of 1865, to Iowa; and were living in Oran township, Iowa, in Sept. 1874. 13251
5339 IV. Martha Janet Whitney, b. at Barre, N.Y., 10 Ap. 1846; married at Churchville, in Riga, N.Y., 6 March 1870, by Rev. N. Jones, Meth. Epis., to John Morris Duff, a physician, who was born at Hartland, N.Y., 29 Aug. 1843, son of John and Laura (Sprague) Duff. He graduated at Buffalo Medical College, 22 Feb. 1870; settled at Gaines, Penn.; moved thence, 1 Aug. 1872, to Alabama Centre, N.Y.; and from there, 16 May 1874, went to Royalton, N.Y., where they were living, without children, in Sept. 1874. He enlisted at Hulberton, N.Y., 11 Aug. 1862, in Co. K, 129th Reg., N.Y. S. Vol. Infantry. The regiment was changed to the 8th Heavy Artillery, in the Winter of 1862-1863, while stationed at Baltimore, Md. He was with his regiment, and doing duty the whole time, without sickness or wounds, till mustered out at Bailey's Cross Roads, Va., 21 June 1865. He took part in the battles of Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburgh, 16-22 June 1864, and in nearly all the battles about Petersburgh, till the close of the war.
At the battle of Cold Harbor, their Colonel, Peter A. Porter, was killed while leading his regiment against the enemy's works; and his body remained where he fell, until recovered by a party of five men who volunteered for that purpose, to wit: "Lieut. (then Sergeant) Leroy Williams, of Batavia, N.Y.; and privates Glen S. Hicks, of Lima, N.Y.; John Morris Duff, of Albion, N.Y.; Samuel Traviss, of Lockport, N.Y.; and Walter Harwood, of Baltimore."
