MARY WHITNEY, dau Joseph F. & Azubah (Griswold) [When I typed in this data, I first suspected a potential problem with the two Azubah Griswolds listed. I then realized that at least the first was associated with Simsbury, CT, a town in which I have quite a few ancestors. In my work with my Simsbury families, I have time and time again noted intermarriages between families. Because of this, I no longer have a problem believing that both names are correctly identified.] The following WHITNEY entry was copied from: Mrs. Frances M. Stoddard, Genealogical History of the Allen Family and some of their Connections (Boston: privately printed, 1891) photoduplication by the New England Historic Genealogical Society. p. 115: Sarah Amelia, eldest daughter of George and Sarah (Burch) Allen, was born in East St. Louis, Ill., February 27, 1838. She was educated at Jacksonville Academy, Illinois. She was married at Annapolis, Md., April 23, 1864, by the Rev. C.H. Henries, Chaplain in the United States Navy, to Eben Whitney, son of Bennett and Susan (Curtis) Whitney, who were natives of Suffield, Conn. Eben Whitney was born October 22, 1837, in Bridgeport, Conn. He was Captain in the 30th S.C.T., from February, 1864, to December, 1865. He is at present a postal clerk in the railway service, from New York to Philadelphia, on the Pennsylvania Railroad. They have only one child, Bessie Winifred, who was born at Astoria, Long Island, N.Y., January 1, 1875.
