WHITNEY WHISTLER, Volume 1, Number 4

So far we have not heard from any one of you concerning any particular area of the country that
you would like to have us check for the WHITNEY families. So, we will continue to seek at
random those areas where we know there are many WHITNEY connections. If this issue seems
like "hit_or-miss," it is just that!

It would seem that the New England area, and New York, would have produced more records of
our WHITNEY ancestors than any other area of the country. Our aim is to "dig out" as many
records as possible from these locations, with the hope that sooner or later one of you will
recognize a connection! Please let us know when we have made a "find." We do appreciate
knowing we are a success.

You will note that we have had to increase the amount of each subscription for the coming year.
The post office has increased postal rates twice this year, and this is the only way that we can
"break even." WHITNEY Whistler will be published three times a year. We will continue to send
you quality and quantity material in our publication.

Queries are free, and we hope that you take advantage of this and send them in for each
publication.

LAND GRANTS IN TOWNSEND, MASSACHUSETTS

In North Town, Jonathan Whitney purchased land for his son of Sudbury, Mass. Amos Whitney
was one of the founders of this town in 1735.
Each proprietor had 60 acres. Among the many were Shadrack and Amos Whitney, 1732. In 1793
the town voted to hire Rev. Nicholas B. Whitney (Harvard, 1793), as a candidate for church
pastor.
The meeting house in Townsend, like others in the early days, assigned pews according to wealth
and position in the community. Lt. Amos Whitney held pew number one in 1772. In the
Revolutionary War, the 1775 Muster Roll contained the names of the above Lt. Amos Whitney,
Israel Whitney, and Lewis Whitney.
In 1777, the selectmen of the town included Levi Whitney, and Benjamin Whitney, Sgt. In this
town lived Samuel Whitney inventor of the woodworth planer.
Amos Whitney was a selectman for many years; 1737, 1738, 1739, 1740, 1748, 1749, 1750,
1751, 1752, 1753, 1756, 1757, 1758, 1759, 1760, 1762, 1764.

WHITNEYS OF NORTHFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS

Aaron, son of Moses of Littleton, was born in 1714, and attended Harvard College, from which
he was graduated in 1737. He became the minister of Petersham, Mass., December, 1738. The
Rev. Mr. Whitney was a Tory, and Petersham was mostly made up of Whigs. The town voted not
to employ Rev. Mr. Whitney to preach. However, he persisted, and their he was kept from the
pulpit by an armed guard, he preached at his own house until his death in 1779.
He married on July 12, 1739 to Alice Baker of Phillipston, who died Aug. 26, 1767. Ruth, widow
of Rev. Daniel Stearns, became his second wife, and died in Keene, N.H., 1788.

FROM THE RECORDS OF ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS THE WHITNEYS

Roxbury was separated from Dorchester in 1710, when the boundary lines were formed between
the two towns. Whitneys in both towns were related; so we include Roxbury after Dorchester,
since there is a correlation here.
At the time the boudary was made, Daniel Whitney and John Whitney were in the area. When
Roxbury went into the Revolution, Capt. Moses Whitney was in charge of one of the Minute
Companies of the town, as part of Col. John Greaten s Minute Regiment, that formed in April of
1775. Ebenezer Whitney joined this group.
Elisha Whitney bought a residence on South Street in 1820, opposite the stonehouse, that in
1995, was part of the Bussey farm.
Third Church and its parsonage, of Roxbury, had as its pastor, in 1836, George Whitney, who
was dismissed in February of 1836.
The Second Company of Roxbury, commanded by Capt. William Draper, in Col. William Heath
Regiment, had the following Whitneys in its ranks; Stephen, Jacob, Isaac, and Ebenezer, in
December, 1775.
There was a Whitney estate, up on Pond Street, consisting of nine acres. A handsome stone
mansion stood there in 1805, built in the old Elizabethan style. It was a short distance from the
town. of Brookline. In the rear of the house, the ground sloped downward through a lush
meadow to a swift-running brook (It is hard to believe such a description when one passes
through this area now). The name of John, the grandson of John Whitney, the first settler here,
appeared in the list of members of the Second Church in 1712. F Whitney, the inventor; Rev.
George Whitney, Pastor of Second and Third Churches here; and Prof. William Dwight Whitney,
oriental scholar; all belonged to this branch of the family.

CHELMSFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, WHITNEYS

Chelmsford is usually thought of as the stronghold of the old Adams family, but some of its
staunchest citizens were Whitneys.
In 1820, Amos Whitney lived along the banks of the river here, past Pawtucket Falls, by a
hundred years previous to this, the Josiah Whitney family lived here, near the line with Littleton.
Among the military personnel in the Revolution were: Salmon Whitney of Groton, age 18, who
fought in Captain John Minott s Co., under direction of Col. Dike; Samuel Whitney, who was not
credited to any town; Jonas and Samuel Whitney, in Captain John Ford s Co. at Ticonderoga;
Col. Josiah Whitney s Regiment of Militia in 1777.
Among the list of contributors toward the building of the Pawtucket , born Sept. 17, 1785, died
1786
Susannah W., bap. Dec. 17, 1786
David S., born August 22, 1788

Daniel Whitney of this town, was a member of the company of Capt. Eldad Wright of Northfield
and Warwick, sent to Cambridge, April 20; 1775 in the regiment of Col. Samuel Williams.
Daniel Whitney (Sgt), and John Whitney, were with Capt. Peter Proctor s Co. that marched to
reinforce the North army, July 10th to August 12, 1777.
In the French-Indian War of 1748, John Whitney; Jr., was a member of Capt. Hobbs famous
expedition.
Rumor about Aaron Whitney bears repeating. As with most rumors, it had no real foundation. He
was a suspected Tory, and stories of his supposed treachery snowballed. On July 10, 1776, all
ammunition and other war material was taken from his store. It took him a long time to regain the
confidence of his fellow townspeople. After many years the rumors were put to rest, and he held
many important offices. In 1782 he was chosen a representative to the General Court.

DORCHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, AND THE WHITNEYS

The accidental drowning at Dorchester Neck, of Moses Whitney, age 17, occurred on Dec. __

Bradford of Woodstock, whom he married Nov. 10, 1803.
Moses Whitney, was the first president of the Dorchester and Milton Bank in 1832.

We have not been able to find the parents of any of the above people mentioned. We will try
again, from another source.

However, in the midst of all the mourning, a sound was heard within the coffin. To everyone s
surprise Jasper "arose" from his "death bed." When the coffin became a subject of discussion, as
to what should be done with it, Jasper Whitney informed the public that he had paid. for the
coffin, and would keep it, and use it, when the time came. A few years later, the father of Jasper
Whitney passed away, and he was buried in that coffin. Published in 1880.
