died 21 Sept. 1843. One of their children, Eli Smith, Jr was an Arabic scholar, missionary and .scientist. Eli Whitney died in New Haven 8 Jan. 1825. Elias Bristol, bp 30 July, 1749 in Newtown, died before 1786, was a Loyalist; he married Charity, daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Whitney) Foote. We print a correction concerning the previous issue. The son of Eli Whitney, Sr. married Henrietta Frances Eld, not Henrietta Frances: Eli Whitney married Henrietta Frances Eld, born 28 June, 1787, bp 27 June, 1791, died 16 April, 1870. Executors were his sons David and Jeremiah. Witnesses were John Bentley, Jeremiah Bentley, and James Blair. Joshua died 26 December, 1736, or 26 April, 1736. This may be the same Will that is listed in Grimes "Abstracts of North Carolina Wills," which reads: "Joshua Whitney-no county listed. 26 December, 1735, received 21 January, 1735. Wife Martha Sons David, Jeremiah, Samuel, Joseph and Francis. Daughters Kering and Ruth. Note: This abstract shows that "Ketring" was a sloop that the sons would inherit, not the daughter. Executors, sons David and Jeremiah Witnesses, John and Jeremiah Bentlye, and James Blair. NOTE: Sometimes when abstracts are done by certain researchers, the gist of the Will is missed, and key phrases and words are left out in the interest of haste, and the overwhelming body of work from which they take the abstracts. It takes a very good researcher to abstract Wills and Deeds correctly. Many of the surnames (and quite a few complete names) that surround them in this list also appear in Christian County, Kentucky in 1799, including the Edmonsons. 1781 Washington County, Virginia, 21 August, 1781 Elijah Whitney and Frathias Wall posted appearance bonds for Thomas Gros. Jacob named in one record and Josiah named in another. Later, Francis Whitney has land patented to "J. Whitney." 1804 Elijah Whitney receives first of his land in Christian County, Kentucky, on Little River. 1810 Christian County, Kentucky census Elijah Whitney has 1 male under 10, 1 male 10_16, 1 male 45+, 2 females under 10, 2 females 10_16 (no adult). 1812 Christian County, Kentucky, 1 February. Elizabeth Whitney (born in Virginia), daughter of Elijah, married Robert R. Gaston. They moved with his family to Wayne County, Illinois. On 12 June: Elijah was an executor of the Will of Cader Barnes. Cader s family: Wife Winey (married 1809, named Winifred Beal or Pool). Son Solomon Daughter Milinday Sons_in-law; Andrew Collins, James Thomas (wife was Elizabeth), and Richard Thomas (wife was Sally). Executors were William Carney and Elijah Whitney. Witnesses were Abraham Smith and Joseph Lawrence. Probably this is the Cader Barnes who was in Bertie County, North Carolina in the 1790 census. 1819 Trigg County, Kentucky, 3 July This area was separated from Christian County by then. Elijah Whitney married Sally Curtis. She was very likely the daughter of the 1810 census neighbor, Russell Curtis, a Revolutionary War veteran from North Carolina. 1820 Trigg County, Kentucky census Elijah Whitney had 1 male under 10, 1 male 16_26, 1 male 45+ and females _ 2 under 10, and 1 female 16_26. Was this a new wife? Also in Trigg County was a Hiram Whitney. This may be the Hiram Whitney who was in Warren County, Kentucky in 1810 census with 1 male 16_26, 2 females under 10, and 1 female 26_45. The 1820 Trigg County census says 3 males under 10, 1 male 26_45, 2 females 10, and 1 female 26_45. Also there was a Josiah Whitnall in Caldwell County, Kentucky, and a Francis Wheatley in Christian County, Kentucky in 1820 (These are considered by genealogists to be the other names for Whitneys, where mispronounced words or mis-spelled words are known). 1826 Tax list of Trigg County, Kentucky, where Hiram Whitney owned land on the Little River, that had been patented to Elijah Whitney. 1828 Tax list of Trigg County, Kentucky, where Elijah Whitney owned land that had been patented to Gilliam Harris. Note that in 1809, in Barren County, Kentucky, an Eliza Whitney married McGilliam Harris, with Hiram Whitney proving the bride was over 21. He disappears from the census and is not found in the 1850 census for that state or any other. His son, John Linus -_ killed by stagecoach robbers while he was on his way to the gold rush in California.
