The Nebraska Territory was organized in 1854, from unorganized territory originally part of the Louisiana purchase. In 1861, a southwestern part was ceded to the Colorado Territory, the northern two thirds was created as the Dakota Territory, and a small western part was gained from the Washington Territory and the Utah Territory. In 1863, the remaining western part was given to the Idaho Territory. In 1867, it was admitted to the Union as the state of Nebraska.
