Your Whitney Lineage
Jeff,
Thanks for joining the Whitney Research Group (WRG), and posting your lineage. I believe that I may be able to extend your lineage as posted. Did your great-grandfather Fred Whitney live in Oswego County, NY, and was he born about 1883? Was his middle initial D? If so, then please send me a message, and I'll supply the results of a short investigation into his ancestry.

Fred D. Whitney
Jeff,
Here are the results of my investigation.
From Churchill, John C., Landmarks of Oswego County, New York. Syracuse, N.Y. (D. Mason, 1895), Part III, p. 28:
"Whitney, Fred D., brother of George M., was born in 1857, in New Haven. He is a harness maker by trade, and also engaged in the undertaking business with his brother. He married in 1881 Genevieve Colvin, a native of New Haven, by whom he has one child, Fred D."
This last would be the candidate for your great-grandfather, Fred D. Whitney.
Also, on p. 254:
"Whitney, George M., was born in New Haven in 1849, and with the exception of one year in Erie County, has always resided there. He was reared a farmer, learned the cooper's trade, dealt in agricultural implements seven or eight years, and is at present in the undertaking business. He has been overseer of the poor several times, supervisor five years, inspector of customs three years, a member of the I.O.O.F., and the Methodist Church. In 1868 he married Mary Searles, and has two daughters, Myrta and Bertha N. His father, Burton C., is a native of Vermont, located in New Haven at an early day, and is now seventy-two years of age."
This information is enough to find the elder Fred and his brother George, and their lineage. See Family:Whitney, Burton Chauncey (1823-1898).
The marriage date of 1868 for George and Mary seems to be too early, as he was living in his parents' family in 1870, without Mary, and she cannot be found under the surname Whitney.
A short search at Ancestry.com reveals that this family group are included in a user-submitted family tree called ANNETTE MCLAUGHLIN. It includes the candidate for your great-grandfather, Fred D. Whitney, who, it says, was born 21 Feb 1891, New Haven, NY, and died 22 Aug 1950, New Haven, NY. His wife is called Laura Bough, daughter of Frank and Mary (Abbott) Bough, born about 1896, died 27 May 1988, Fulton, NY.
Of his father, also Fred D. Whitney, it says he was born in May 1857, New Haven, NY, and died 7 Jul 1905, New Haven, NY. His wife Genevieve Colvin was born 14 Oct 1861, Cheevers Mills, and died 24 Oct 1913, New Haven, NY. She was daughter of Henry and Myra (-----) Colvin. Their daughter Ariel M. Whitney was born 17 Aug 1895, New Haven, NY, and died 28 May 1975, Suwannee-Duluth, Gwinnett Co., GA. She married Grant Newton Lindsley.
There is more about Burton C. Whitney, his wife and children.
The candidate for your great-grandfather Fred D. Whitney appears in his parents' family in the 1900 census of New Haven, Oswego Co., NY, page 204A, lines 45-48, house 230, family 234:
Whitney, Fred D. Head W M May 1857 43 mar 18y New York New York New York Undertaker Owns house free -----, Genevieve Wife W F Oct 1861 38 mar 18y 2ch 2liv New York New York New York -----, Fred D. Son W M Feb 1891 9 sgl New York New York New York At school -----, Ariel M. Dau W F Aug 1895 5 sgl New York New York New York
He also appears in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses, all in New Haven, NY. In the last, he is F. D. Whitney, and he and wife Laura, married 11 years, have no children in their family.
The above information does not mention Catharine Barry. That casts doubt on the identification made above. Was there a divorce and a second marriage? Or was your great-grandfather a different person, who lived elsewhere?

Fred Whitney
Jeff,
Have you considered using DNA to help your search? Have a Whitney-named male relative tested, to see what branch of the Whitney family Fred belonged to.
